I feel fairly certain it would be a bad idea,,but would ALOX work with black powder for a 20" barrel carbine ?

Alox and BP ???  Just say no ;) Get some big lube bullets with the right kind of lube, especially for a rifle, the fouling needs to stay soft. Unless you want to shoot a pattern instead of a group. ;D Good Luck :)

Not as well as a black powder lube, in Sharps shooting I always had to wipe between shots to get any groups till I starded useing proper lube. for CAS I would quess most anything would work for the short range and large targets but it's easy to use something like SPG to lube bullets and it works with smokeless as well.

When I first started out in CAS I loaded up ammo (38/357) with BP and alox/beeswax, the standard smokeless powder lube. It was a disaster. I got PATTERNS after about 5-10 rounds. Once I went to SPG+a grease cookie (thin beeswax disc) I could shoot all day. This was in a 20" carbine. Big Lube bullets will be all you need with a halfway decent lube such as a simple mix of Beeswax and olive oil. I use 50/50 BW & deer tallow (shot a fat doe, just couldn't waste the tallow). It makes a nice firm BP lube.

I use the Alox with mica and APP and have no trouble with leading in pistols or rifle, have been shooing this combo all year in my 72 open tops and my 73. But then the APP also makes a oil to help keep things lubed and soft, shoot 6 stages wikth no trouble.

May I show my ignorance and ask what is "APP"?

But that is APP.  Blackpowder needs the proper lube.

Sagebrush Alox lube works well with blackpowder, smokeless and the smokeless with fake smoke added stuff.

Try it Marshall.  Do a double blind study with Alox and a good recognized black powder lube and report back.  There's a reason why Alox is not used with Genuine Powder, but it would be good if you would refresh peoples minds.

You mean a good recognized blackpowder lube like Sagebrush Alox?

I once shot a Black Powder match using standard / smokless hard lubed boolits in my 44/40 Piettas and 24" barrel Uberti 1873.I also tossed them in Lee Liquid Alox before loading them as a bit of extra protection.

I used Moose Milk and a bore snake every second scenario and as predicted by my mate who is a lot more experienced in these matters, i got a bit of leading towards the end of the rifle barrel (may have been ok in a shorter barrel). The handguns were fine.

I seemed to hit everything I aimed at and had a few misses over the weekend, which is normal for me, mind you cowboy action targets are not very demanding accuracy wise.

Would I recommend it?? No

Would I do it again if I didn't have any proper BP boolits and was going to miss out on a shoot? Yes, they got me shooting and cleaned up with a bit of elbow grease.

Strangely enough, in the Pietta / Colt clones, there was virtually no leading. I have shot a lot of smokeless Winchester Cowboy factory ammo in these guns (the ones in the natural brown cardboard box) and these lead like crazy. I bought heaps of it when my I was nursing my late wife and didn't have time to reload. I now have about 1500 cases and they are rarely available and when they are, sell for $AU70 a box of 50, so I try and stick to reloads now, haha!

I used to joke that it took me so long to clean the handguns and get the leading out, that I would could had reloaded ammo in the same amount of time for a lot less money! The young guys at the range are waiting for me ta die to see who inheirits my bigggggggg bucket of very desirable 44/40 Winchester brass, lol.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!
