Another direction to like at this from is, what is the downside to the Pale Rider loading technique?  I am using old style solid plate Kirst Converters and with a preloaded cylinder at hand can replace cylinders faster than I can extract cartridges and reload one at a time.  Though the extra cylinder does cost money and does still require time to empty, the time factor is moot when it occurs at the unloading table!  It never really happens anymore but if you stumbled onto a rare on the clock full reload a cylinder swap couldnt be beat.  Not sure how the other six-shooter Howell brand would compare but it might even be faster since there would be no need to hold an index for the flat bottom plate on the Kirst???

Trade off on the R&D is you have to line up the register pin when putting the recoil plate back onto the cylinder. Takes about as much time as positioning the flat side down on the Kirst, which to say is negligible with a small amount of practice.

I never had any problem with the R & D indexing pin because When I swapped cylinders, it is with another full set including backing plate, yep two full convertors, pop one out and the other in, noit having to worry about the indexing pin because the full rig was within reach. The only time I tried to swap cylinders was at the range pistol house and NOT in any matches. but I did have a shim stock shim in the carried full cylinder tat could be removed quickly by just pulling it out, the shimstock kep the firing pins from contacting the primers on the loaded cylinders. That way a fall or stumble or something hitting the thick leather cylinder carrier Would not fire the extra cylinder.
Never shot a match where I had to swap cylinders, but of course we all practice it if we are shooting 58 Remy's.

I used my '58s at last years SE Regional with the old style Kirst Converters, no gates or ports.  I was using the short Cowboy 45 Specials loaded with APP and had no problems with the loading technique.  We did not have a stage reload but at the loading/unloading table went quicker and easier than using an old style Remington extractor with a gated cylinder.  Personally I would like to see Kirst offer the old style cylinders again and this includes for the Colt revolvers as well, though I am sure far fewer people would be interested in this for the Colt style and it can be accomplished with the R&D anyway.

While they are currently out of stock.....new supplies in a month or two (most of the gun industry is 90 days oy right now)  :(
We do carry Ungated Remington rings. They are called the Pale Rider ring.

Give VTI (our Master Distributer) a call and researve one  860-435-8068

Unfortunately until the Italians make .36's with .357 bores or the ammo companies offer .41 Colt inside lubed cartridges there just isn't enough sales to warrent a new ring for the Colts.....So R&D will do what they do and we will do breach loaders and all is good.

Raven, it was nice seeing you all at the NCOWS convention. I have the cylinders installed, which didn't take any time at all, still need to cut the loading ports, after it finally decides to be Spring here southern Indiana so I can work in my shop. I'm looking forward to receiving the ejector assy. when they come in and can be shipped. Thanks.
