In regards to the "odor" . . . . on what I've made, I usually just throw in a pound of common nails into the gallon jug and let it set in my garage in AZ.  I do keep the jug "capped" but let it open every once in a while to let the gasses off.  What I've made gives a nice black color and usually there are parts of nails left in the bottom. . . . so I don't think the odor is because it needs more iron.  I'll try leaving the jug "uncapped" and see if that helps any in regards to the odor.  I left a gallon "brewing" while I've been gone for the summer . . . we usually go back out in October but are having to wait until January due to some family health issues.  The fellow who checks on the house hasn't said anything about there being an explosion in the garage so I'm guessing my gallon that's been brewing since last April is still doing O.K. - I did set it inside a large "tote box" though just in case!

I've been using "white" vinegar - probably should experiment with the apple vinegar as well.  The first couple of batches I kept in smaller plastic bottles that were easier to use and most of what I dyed with it, even after the soda wash and setting out, smellied like string bean pickles we used to make when I was a kid.
