Very interesting; I always like reading "what happened on this date" stuff.

Let's see, in 1812 there was a little war called the second American revolution.
Louisiana admitted as 18th US state
Napoleon's Grand Army invades Russia
Duke of Wellington defeats French at Battle of Salamanca, Spain
The USS Constitution under the command of Captain William Bainbridge, captures the HMS Java off the coast of Brazil after a three hour battle.
Earthquake destroys 90% of Caracas Venezuela; about 20,000 die

Thanks to a bill signed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, December 12, 2012 or 12/12/12, is officially being acknowledged as Aaron Rodgers Day.

Well ..... if written in "proper" British Empire fashion, the first one is the day, the second is the month and the last is the year .....

But I guess with dates rendered in this fashion, they need to always be followed with a little note: "As written by a Briton" or "As written by an American" ....

On second thought (for this "same-same-same" type of date only) Sir Charles answer is the best one!  ;D

You guys are a little premature .... the apocalyptic date is the 21st, not the 12th.

I am accepting any and all guns which will no longer be required by those who are anticipating the end of the world as we know it.

Nobody said anything about the "apocalyptic date" Todd ....  Just commenting on it being one of those dates in which each of the three elements of the abbreviated form "xx-yy-zz" are, in fact, the same ....  as in xy-xy-xy .....

I, personally, fully expect to wake up on the morning of the 22nd in my usual curmudgeonly state ....    >:(

In 1812, didn't you guys get your White House burnt down by a group of British Regulars, Canadian militia and Natives? Oh ya and got your butt kicked out of Canada after invading us? No hard feelings guys  ;D ;D

Funny war, that! Both sides can claim victory!  Fact is, Canada still exists alongside the elephant & donkey.  It was not an extension of your revolution, it was an attempt at a land grab that failed.   (Whoops;- Better watch my bad mouth, never know who is listening!)

And Dalhousie University in Halifax was founded on customs duties seized in Castine Maine at the end of this war and continues to train students from Maine in dentistry. A tribute to the Great Undefended Border that is now sadly lost to border insecurity.

What "border insecurity"? Real or imagined? It's more like post 911 paranoia and allows 'Big Brother' to tighten his grip on the people who are not the problem.

The same analogy applies to "gun control". Sir John A. was ag'in it as he said it would only disarm the very people who should be armed.

You are partially correct sir.  The president's mansion did not burn to the ground.  It was severely gutted, but the supporting structure stood.  However, those were excellent learning experiences and allowed for growth and advances in our society.  We also had divine providence protect us in the form of severe storms that swept the evil invaders out of our fair capital and extinguished the fires.   http://www.afweather.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123042444

So you see, the Grand Architect of the Universe (and perhaps G. Washington himself) were watching over us and vanquished the foreign invaders.   ;D  8)

Here's a story from the recent movie "Lincoln", which I enjoyed.
SPOILER!

Lincoln: One of the leaders of the American Revolution -- I forget now who it was, Ethan Allen, perhaps -- visited England after the war. His host entertained him comfortably, but was the sort of fellow who constantly disparaged America and Americans generally and never could get over the fact we had beaten them in the war.

To amuse himself and to twit his American guest, the host hung a print of George Washington in his water closet. It had been there for a few days, and the host knew the American must have seen it, but he had said nothing. Finally overcome by curiosity, the host asked his guest what he thought of the picture of Washington.

"It is most appropriately hung," the American replied. "Nothing ever made the British shit like the sight of George Washington."

Gen Lew Wallace;  We can josh each other, now that it is ancient history.  I wish the Heimats Securitat Deinst and both our governments could note that fact in their agendas.

Oh to have those good 'ol days of the Great Undefended Border back.  (If it ever existed in any meaningful way?)
