Notice that the archer uses the "Mongolian" draw. where the string is pulled by the right thumb locked by the forefinger with the arrow along the right side of the bow using the left thumb as the arrow rest. Western and modern archery that we are familiar with uses three fingers to draw the string with the arrow on the left of the bow over the left knuckle.

I think that the short draw when the archer is performing close-quarter speed tricks may have been more common than we realize. With the heavy draw weights common in asian bows it could still be very effective.  In North America the eskimos and a few Indian groups with close Asian backgrounds used the Mongolian draw.

This guy is amazingly fast, and still able to penetrate chainmail.

very interesting, as I have just started to reaquaint my self with archery. but not the fancy dancy compound rigs. I went out and got a youth 25lb bow from Big% to start with and I like what it feels like..

Oh, I don't know. I can notch the arrow, attach the the tension release, make the draw, set the bone on bone, anchor, start to flex the lats and pow!! In about two minutes. 8)

What do you all figure the draw strength is on those bows?

I just wasted an hour reviewing comments to the clip just above.  Lars won't explain anything, won't offer training, etc.  He says he still hasn't perfected his techniques.  The only comment of his that I found useful was the following;

"I have many good bows.

Some recurve bows where hand section is changed.

I am very happy with the small Kaya bows.

Currently I'm waiting with great anticipation for the arrival of the custom made Fast Shooting longbow as Falco is building for me.

sincerely

Impressive!

Anyone remember the scene in "Shogun" where a Samurai warrior shoots through a wall and places three arrows rapidly into a gate post?
As he entered the house, he paced off the distance in and as he made turns. He knew exactly where he was in relation to the intended target. After the shots, he expected the host (Richard Chamberlain) to check his accuracy, which he did reluctantly, not expecting to see hits.
That is mastery! Movie magic, but I don't doubt the skills of ancient warriors with their weapons.

If the 'do-gooders' ever realize that people can acquire these skills, archers will have to be vetted, their bows registered and their arrows micro-marked. All in the interest of POG, of course.

Hey P.J., that was only a movie. It didn't really happen! It was faked! Not everything that you see in the movies can actually be done.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Did I not say that it was "movie magic"?

However, I have seen a documentary on adherents dedicated to preserving the Samurai skill at arms and the code of Bushido. What these men can do with a bow is amazing, even from horseback at the gallop. The scene I described would be well within the capabilities of a disciplined archer/warrior who had developed the capacity to know where he is in relation to a given object.

It is no different to what is done with a map and compass, navigating in the dark. Hitting an a obstacle, you move 'X' number of paces right or left to get by and return to your original bearing.

Even you could do it.
