...I do have a question about the 1875s though. Are the firing pins supposed to be loose in the hammer? My Colts don't really move around but the firing pin on this one can be moved around.

I expect that movement is normal, though I don't own a Remington.  The FP's on my 1st Gen Colts do not move.  On my 2nd and 3rd Gen, plus Ubertis, plus Pietta, all move.

Finally picked up my first Remington 1875. This one is a Uberti imported by Stoeger.

It shoots great.

Perfectly normal.  ;)

Thanks. I have not noticed it on any or my other Uberti guns. I will go back and double check though.

I know you have a number of Richards-Masons.  If those wiggle, you have a problem.  :D

So while waiting for the casting pot to warm up, I took the time to grab the Remington's for a family group photo.

Relatively new to Cowboy guns in general, but I picked up an authentic Remington 1858 made in 1862. Love the way it feels, love the look. But don't care for black powder loading. Wanted a cartridge conversion, but couldn't find what I was looking for so picked up a pair of 1875's in stainless for SASS (yeah, I know......not the winners choice...but I like them....and already have 2 pair of tuned .38 SAA 5.5"s and wanted something different in .45, and just really love these pistols) and a case hardened one for back country horse riding.

One is Taylor's, 2 are Cimarron. Who is known, for tuning them/lightening the springs perhaps, maybe even adding a lower reach hammer? (At least the two stainless ones I occasionally plan to shoot Classic Cowboy with-the blued/case hardened one will probably be left stock, it's just for field carry when riding) Thanks!

Sorry, unable to post picture of the three, file size is way too big, even from a cropped iPhone.....not sure what's up with that...but you get the idea!

Howdy Mr. Sage.  I believe your 1875's were made by Uberti?  I don't recall anyone else making any except the short-lived Hartford Armory (Rare as hens teeth but I got to handle one years ago and wow! primo action out of the box).  And as such, they are not stainless steel, pretty certain Uberti never did that on the Remingtons except for the '58's. I could be wrong, but I worked for Cimarron for a long time.  ;)  A lot of people think that guns "in the white" are stainless because they look like it (try a magnet).

Nobody makes a set of lightened springs for the Remingtons.  A 'smith can thin down (hourglass) the stock springs.  But first, back out the strain screw in the front strap.  That is all I had to do to my Uberti Remington conversions (same spring) to make them feel great.  That made the strain screw stick out in front, so I filed (dremel) down the rear of the strain screw (the part that pushes against the spring) to make it shorter and not protrude out the front strap.

Also, nobody makes lowered hammers for the Remingtons, so your options are to have someone heat and bend them down, or cut off the hammer spurs and weld on something like Ruger Blackhawk or Montado hammer spurs.  There's a number of cowboy gunsmiths that can do that sort of thing.  One I know of is Boomstick Jay near Dallas/Ft.Worth:

"....not the winners choice...but I like them..."  That's what counts!

Iron City Sage,
I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about your '75's.  Since you didn't post pics, I assumed "in the white" for your guns when you said stainless.  Are they really shiny?  If so, more likely nickel plated, which would be fairly common and in my opinion more desirable since it not only looks great but a lot of originals were nickeled. And the magnet will still stick  ;) .  I bought a Taylors nickeled Richards-Mason on another forum that the seller said was stainless  but I knew better and let him know but nickeled was what I wanted!

You might have to play with the resizing on your phone to get the pics down to 300k each.  Mine is android and it's easy (though I had to figure it out since I'm fairly new to smartphones  :)  If you can't figure it out, I can PM you my email address and you can email them to me and I'll post them here for you.  That is after all what this thread is for!

Thanks, yes apparently they are nickel not stainless. Bought a pair of these Cimmarons in Nickel, and a Taylor's case hardened and blued. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1094308227

And I would love to post them! But the website is a little dated, and won't take modern file sizes, and I have no idea how to dumb them down, haven't had to do that or use a file storage linked site in a decade or two! If I can figure it out I'll be sure to post them, thanks,
