I'v bee messing with wax bullets( home made) ,they shoot strong and accurate( 15 ft.) but the primers keep backing out and drag'n the cylender, what am i do'n wrong????

The primers will back out if thats all ya have in the casing. Try drilling out the hole in the casing (the little one that the primer fires thru) do it with just one and see if that works. WM

Nothin' that I can see.  There is some headspace inevitably in all firearms, and that, as well as low presure from the wax bullet loads gives you proud primers.  The firing pin drives the round forward in the chamber until stopped by the rim before igniting the primer. Normally when the charge goes off the pressure blows the primer back onto the breach folowed by the case, and the primer re-seats,  All is good again.  In a low pressure round like a wax bullet load the case might not be driven back, leaving the primer proud.  If the cylinder is loosley fitted, (End shake?) the problem might be woorse.

In well designed revolvers there is a slight step where the firing pin is centered, so if there is a proud primer the extra space between the cylinder and the recoil shield allows rotation.  I'm not quite sure if I have used the right terminology, if not, someone will explain it better.  I'm not sure of the remedy, but I just noticed that Wildman has a good suggestion.

A #50 (approx .070") works pretty well with plastic bullets (like hot glue) but you can go as large as 3/32 (.094) and maybe even a bit larger.
Starline makes "blank" 45 Colt cases with larger flash holes.......

What they said about enlarging the primer flash hole (but not too much, or part of the primer can shoot through the hole).  If they still drag, polishing your recoil shield can help.

Yep, to shoot wax you need to enlarge the primer hole.  HOWEVER, make absolutely sure you don't mix the modified brass in with the brass you are reloading with powder and bullets!!!!!!!

Slamfire

Hey gang , polished shield, drilled out primer hole.( 7/32 ") helped some, but still got drag. I'm using federal primer's cause i'v got 500. Of all the sights i'v looked up no one offers wax bullets for 44/40 cal ( 427-.429),.I LIKE THE ONES FROM Bandit supply,. Do i need to change primers, which brand????

Uh, are you sure you drilled out the holes to 7/32" ?? That would be larger than an entire primer  :o
What I have read as the largest size suggested for drilling the flash hole is 9/64".

Also make yer own "wax bullets", just melt a wax mixture, like BP lube, which is soft in a pan with water. Maybe 3/8" thick let it cool press the cartridges into it like a cookie cutter. Prime after putting the wax bullet into the case. Easy cheap and whatever thickness ya want. WM

Abiline, you are correct!!! it was 7/64"( stupid computor !!!), i'm using parafan , cause that's what the "cook" had handy.

The only wax bullets I've shot in years are these http://www.waxbullet.com/ they come with the brass modified to take a 209 shotshell primer and never had a problem using them.

Ya! Well i'm still gettin high primers,,like john say's 1/8th" ,,next step see if that will work better,,There is ( was) a rige line on the shild, i honed it down & polished it out helped a bunch. Question!!! are federal's subject to ,back'n out??? Don't remember ever having this problem with cci's( but i never shoot wax bullits before).

I use CCI's and have very few backout on blanks. I had used some Winchester once but have a greater amount of backed out primers.
I use CCI's for all my loads since I don't have any reduced power springs in any of my shootin' irons.

I found this link on the leather board.  It is about loading BLANKS, but there may be some help embedded within it?

Sir Charles, you were right , the info., was helpful,,, but it seem that all agreed the fed., primers caused a lot of back out problems, and that about answered my orig., question.  Thank you.
