The only hog hunt I was on was with dogs. I took him at about 70 yards as he broke bay. Got him with a 45/70 Contender. Hunting bear with dogs is much better though. Both are good eating. Tj

We ain't got much issue with feral hogs 'round my parts-since the NC Wildlife Board opened up night hunting on 'em!

Issue we DO got is damn coyotes.  Starting to come INTO the city, they are.  I mean, not that I live in a proper CITY (we've got like, maybe 1000-2000 people in the "City Limits").  Had several dogs killed by the things, owners are being asked to bring their dogs/cats/pets in general in at night-and not three nights ago, the local Cattle Baron lost a couple of head.  They just opened up night hunting, it's already year round, no limit.

Similar problem, same solution:  "Assault" type rifle.  I favor the Mosin Nagant 91/30, while my brother likes his AR.

To the OP-best of luck with the hog problem-could you maybe trap 'em?

If you can't come up with night vision , what about flares ? Shoot up a flare and it's like days .

Roger,

You ought to give Cypress Sam a call.  He'd probably be willing to help you with the hogs for a cut of the pork.

Well, if they only come out there at night, where do they hide out during the day? Maybe a plan might be to try and get them there, unless it's off your property. Or maybe try to catch them somewhere between the bedding area and your pasture, while it's still light.

If that doesn't work, what about a laser sight? Just put a dot on the pig and squeeze.....

Another possibility....maybe if you just start putting out some corn and feed them, they might tame down a bit and maybe even come out in the day, then get some buddies all armed, and make sure none escape............

Hmmmmmmmm.. he can have the whole hog if he takes one

PE...We believe they are in wooded area two properties over...this began when someone started then abruptly stopped to clear it.
I have no permission to hunt there

Here it is 3 days later.... I shot one ..... but he survived

It was dark and I could not see my front sight  ::)  he was side on at about 200 feet.
I shot and he turned and ran straight at me, when I cocked in a second round ( Bolt Action ) he made sharp left and
disappeared in the tall grass in the next pasture.
The others lit out from the original POA.  :-\

I was on them again Sat. night and saw my target, I had shot him through the left ear, grazed across his skull and the deflected
bullet nicked his right ear  >:(  1 " lower  and I'd have had a head shot !  :-[

A friend brought out his big guns Sunday night , two AR Types with night scopes, he has a hunting lic. and the guns have Suppressors We put out corn....
Those scopes are amasing, like Green day light and what ever is alive is bright white.
Which opened my eyes , because a some guy and his buddy was out four wheeling in his back pasture diagonal to mine
Drinking beer and burping, I could see their image clearly and make out exactly what they were doing.
They were maybe 500-600 yards away.

Course the pigs were a no show ... went to bed about 1 AM having to work Monday...  they did come after that  >:(
I was out again Last night.... Monday night, and they again were a no show.....but this morning, the corn I put out Sunday night
is gone...So now...  all I'm doing is being out waited & outsmarted  >:(

I am paying a guy and he'll bring traps tonight ..... ::)

The saga continues  :-\

They apparently get real witty real quick. A game warden told me that's why they didn't want anyone hunting them when they first got started in my neighboring county. They had hopes of trapping them all but they said some guys had taken it upon themselves to hunt and try and shoot them and after that they got real hard to catch. Apparently when someone first turned them loose in the area they were somewhat domesticated but their wild instinct soon kicked in.

Pigs can turn wild in an amazingly short time, complete with changing their facial structure and teeth.  They can go from barnyard "cuties" (cuties to some - my Mom raised one she called "Henrietta") to the Wild Boar-Hog look in less than 2 months, if I remember my studies correctly.  They are the only animal that can make that radical appearance change.

And they're smart as all get out!  MUCH smarter than most of your neighbor's dogs ... or kids ... or maybe the neighbors themselves!

Nov 27 was my last post...and I still have the SOB's

The Big deal Hog Hunter was a bust !  wiith his two AR's and night vision he was mostly jibber jabber. ::)
He quit coming though he saw them several times.

We have a large trap now about 10 x 10 x 8 high  and it is baited with crack corn..it was triped the first nigh but no pigs.
It was reset but no luck last night  >:(  I'm gonna try some other bait .
The trap owner even said he saw the dam things while he was setting it.

And by the way, these 4 running my property arn't the only ones,
seems there are three more about 3/4 mile away to the North,  and some others about 2 sections (1 mile) over in the other direction.
They don't seen to cross the paved roads.  :-\
They are described as different color hogs ( mine are Black, 1 redish brown) these others are spoted !

So far one has been cought with dogs, and the guy that cought it ...works for me ,

"HE is Bar B Q  this Friday at our CO. Christmas Party"  :D

He's coming out with his dogs this week !

I took a dog to a Christmas party once. But in my defense, it was a blind date!
The main thing to remember,is not to get excited!

Major, I would suggest you fix the trap so it's just open for a few days or a week, just feed them in there untill they get used to coming in it, to be sure you get them all at one time. If you just get one, and the others see it, you'll need a new method for the rest.

Lucky for her ...Huh !  ;D

PE thats a good plan, may try that....we are of the opinion they are shying away because it's something new in their pasture playground.

We are unsure if it just tripped,  :-\ the corn seemed untouched, or they tripped it and got out in time, they be might quick to do that.
We are also using Grape Cool Aid as a lure.

GOT ONE !

we traped all 4 but the dam trap door fell a bit crooked and the smaller 3 squeezed loose. >:(
I have a photo of the 4 while we had them.... they saw us and in panic got loose through the small opening.

but we have one !  not sure if we'll get a chance with this trap again ...they are pretty smart cridders

Roger, I wish it wasn't so far out there. I would enjoy bringing my 12 gauge riot gun and my 44 mag Redhawk to take care of your problems. I would grind them into sausage aand enjoy sausage patties all winter.

Roger, I don't have the unlimited financial resources that Pancho has, My 12 ga pump and 44 mag revolver gets things done at about 4th of the price.
