Monday I picked up a new (well lightly used) Ruger 44 Mag with 7 1/2" Barrel. My what a big one. This will be quite the challenge to make a rig that is functional and great looking. Compare the sizes here with the Black powder 36 rig which was my first one.

Any suggestions would be very welcome  ::)

I'd think anything that would look OK with a Walker would do fine.

Just keep in mind that the frame is slightly larger than the Vaquero's...I would start off with a good paper pattern and make sure all fit was good before I cut leather....also keep in mind that the front sight is taller tham most...patterns are really easy to make once you get the hang of it.  Don't be afraid because of it's size....a few years back I made this rig for a S&W 500 magnum with a 12" barrel on it.

I think I noticed Will Gormleys patterns at Tandy include one for a Blackhawk.

This holster was made by the greatly talented Ned Buckshot for my 1858 Buffalo Hunter with long barrel,if the tie down tongue was a little longer the  RSB would fit nicely..That Ned can sure make a nice rig!!!

That's a very nice rig indeed. The front and rear sights are very large and will need some close attention for the pattern.

YEP~But i like that cap and ball you have :) :) After six shots of 44 mag in that Ruger you'll go OK! That's about enough of that ;D

I'm not sure what you are asking. How to size the pattern? What style holster to make? ????  I've been making holsters for Super Blackhawks, etc., for over four decades, and I can tell you it isn't that much of a problem. The suggestion about making a paper pattern is an excellent one. You can use paper grocery bags and an ordinary stapler to form a paper pattern. Don't wrap it too tightly, as there will have to be allowance made for the thickness of the leather.
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

well said Trailrider...I like using file folders for my patterns..they are pre-creased and can be added to if needed

A SBH is really not that big of gun, they pretty much fit an 1858 Remington holster as long as it's cut to allow for adjustable sights.

I'm fairly new to this craft and not anywhere near as good at it as the pro's here.  I made these two for SBH's.  First is a shoulder rig and then a belt holster out of horsehide. Even for a rookie like me they didn't seem any more difficult than making a holster for a smaller shootin' iron.  I sure do like seeing the outfits you guys come up with.....thanks!

Ok Rick.....here's a couple more amateur bear outfits.  Now get to work and show me how it's supposed to be done, I need all the help I can get.   ;)
