I use Federal paper once fired for trap reloads with smokeless in a Remington 1100 trap gun, and any plastic hull for BP that I can scrounge up in a SxS for CAS. Works for me!  Good shooting!

Grapeshot Pard, I think you have the right idea.  I have some Magtech all brass hulls for my 20ga that give me no problems at all.  Must have been a good reason why they made them, way back then. .

Happy Thanksgiving.

I keep my fired paper hulls in a warm, dry place-near the furnace-prior to reloading them, and only load what I need.  Hope this helps. Yeah, my basement is dry.  French drains and 2 coats Dry Loc on the walls work well. Dehumidifier too. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I used to shoot alot of BP skeet with paper hulls. Always shot them once and threw them away. I'd dig "new" ones out of the trash can for my supply.

Howdy Roosterman,

Your experience with paper hulls more or less parallels mine.  The paper hulls seem to handle black powder loads well, but my experience with these old Remington hulls had to be somewhat singular.  I've loaded Fed 12ga paper hulls several times with no problems.  But these old Remington hulls may have just deteriorated over time.

Whatever the problem is, I'm not bringing them back to a SASS firing line.  Once is enuf.

The only reason for starting this thread is because I don't want some unlucky pard to have half a hull half the way down his barrel and then blow up his gun.  That'd be ugly.

I always used the red federal cases, never came across any Remingtons. When I first started cowboy  I showed up with BP filled  paper hulls and the other cowboys snickered at me and told me I looked very cool but would be very slow. They wre right of course as paper doesn't shuck well. I switched to brass shells as they not only are the coolest choice, they also shuck well too. ;D
If you shoot smokeless you can get several reloads with paper Federals, as they don't burn out as quick.

There are some recipes for paper hulls that can't be duplicated in plastic.  Not so for black powder, but heathen fad smokeyless powder seems to develop a different pressure curve with paper as compared to plastic.  Some of my old books have recipes for paper that I'd be hard pressed to duplicate in plastic hulls.  Could be the paper base wad soaking up some of the shock.

Whatever the case, I've also loaded the red Federal paper hulls with Genuine Powder and had no problem with them.  They make a nice roll crimp too.

I'm thinkn' that the very old Remington green paper hulls I have have just deteriorated to the point where any loads will part them.  They are going in the chit can.

If ya have no memories, you have no past.  If you have no past, then you have no future.

Besides; those memories can be fun!

I have used the paper hulls for a while now . I use them for my Turkey loads , and these loads have produced a few Turkeys . These hulls work good for hunting but for Cowboy shooting they give the shooters a big disadvantage . But then if you have decided to shoot black , you aren't looking for advantages . I think everyone should try shooting black at least once .

if you haven't noticed, cowboy shooting is really not how the real cowboys shot, at least those that shoot real black powder, use the guns from the cowboy days are really doing as they did, but we all also know that cowboy shooting is really not about history, it is all about how fast we can shoot.  and that is all I'm going to say about that...why you ask? well I'm guilty of it to  ;) ;D

Not ALL of us care how fast we shoot.  A bunch of us just have FUN!  (Heck, they time me with a sundial.)

Steelhorse,
They time me using Stonehenge!! I think it takes me from the solstice to the equinox. But guess what? I pay to shoot so I get more than my money's worth each time.

We had a guy here who won the SASS World Champeensheep! I was talking to him one day and discussing his last trip to America. We worked out that he was so quick, he had travelled to America and stood around waiting for most of the weekend for three minutes actual shooting over 10 scenarios!

He cycles and fires the 1873 Uberti so quick, that the highly tuned rifle was starting to slow him up (and it was suffering from excessive wear). He was researching small aircraft Messerschmit bearings to get er' going a bit quicker! He couldn't have shot any quicker with an AR!
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!
