Gen Lew Wallace

I would like to say thank you to all the people who served before me, and those I served with, and those who are serving now and into the future to defend this nation.  Of all the things I worry about when I lay down at night, one thing I don't worry about is the quality of the American military personnel.

Please feel free to share a photo of your service!

Hi,

Since you asked ... I had forgotten how baby-faced I was ... incidentally, I looked for the pic in the dress uniform, but it was gone .... all I found was this one ....

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

I saw a caption for the a similar pic to the above one ....'Go ahead and laugh, but the natives think I'm Superman!'

Insult me if you wish Rick, but do n ot insult my service to my country. I am proud that I served honorably, unlike some that have never served, and some of them have even run for public office.

Another great picture.  Salute to our friends up North.  What is your weapon in the picture?

That's a metric FN-FAL. Cal 7.62 NATO.

Actually, it's not ..... if you care to look it up in "Small Arms of the World". The rifle pictured is a version of the FN C-1 service rifle of my era, giving me a life-long love affair with the 7.62 x 51mm cartridge.

It's the FN C-2 7.62mm of Canadian manufacture, the LMG that replaced the Bren. It weighed 15 lbs and was equipped with a folding bipod that made up the forestock as in the picture. The legs of it were quite long to accommodate the 30 rd mag, making it necessary to dig in the feet of the bipod if you wanted to avoid arching your back. Then the 30 rd mag used to bottom, so we used to use the 20 rd mag of the FN C-1 semi-auto only rifle.
It had a three position, thumb operated selector (visible above Garand's thumb)  - safe, semi-auto and full auto. It was difficult to control in full auto and the body screw that held the receiver and barrel assembly together used to cycle itself loose during prolonged fire. You learned to keep it tight with a bayonet periodically.
It would have been a better weapon had it been fitted with the FN-designed three shot burst escapement mechanism Belgium used on their version of the basic rifle. It lacked the accuracy of the famed Bren Gun in both single and sustained fire.

"Thank you" seems to be so trivial compared to what so many of you posting here have done for me and for this country but Thank You all from the bottom of my heart and please do thank your loved ones as well for giving you up long enough to serve.  I can only imagine what they went through while you were away.

Great pictures all!  It's nice to see the faces behind the names.

It is said that those who fought in WW II were "the last great generation", or words to that effect. When the gross national product of the nations of the world are directed towards one cause, it's impact is far reaching.

I was a "Cold War Warrior" for 12 years and I often felt a fraud being on a Remembrance Day parade with be-medalled vets, many broken in health and some in abject poverty. Now I rarely attend, preferring to honour their sacrifice by living well today. Those that didn't make it home would understand.

There have been wars since and an ongoing war that continues to cost many lives and an abject waste of national treasure. We never learn, so we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

"And yes, it's true what they say
of war and war's alarms,
But oh, that I was young again
and held her in my arms ...."

Well,i was in 5th grade when JFK was gunned down, the teacher just told us,i got up walked outside and looked up expecting to see nukes fall out of the sky after haveing done all those under the desk drills wondering about mom dad brothers sisters and animals.Nothing happened so i guess somebody somewhere did something right. You were doing something right PJ Hardtack, that's what matters~

I had the fire dept out to my house yesterday becuase my fire and carbon alarms kept going off, they were not out fighting a fire, but they were doing something right too and they fixed the alarm.

~THANKS TO BOTH~

British, Canadian & Australian FN's were all "inch", no metric s**t! They were exceptionally reliable guns as long as you used a 20 rd magazine, once the 30 rds were used, forget it.
