MikeM.

I just got my new Cimarron 1851 RM Conversion. Fit and finish are both pretty darn good but my grips needed a little TLC to make them fit correctly around the edges.I "tweaked" them a little and got them to fit perfectly but now I cant seem to get this wood to take any stain. It just pretty much wipes right off. Can anybody give some pointers on how to make these look good?? I will refinish the entire set if somebody can tell me how to darken em up a bit :-\....Thanks

I've had good luck taking the old finish off and applying Fiebing's leather dye, either dark brown or medium brown, then when they're dry I put a good oil finish on 'em.  Tru-Oil, Lin-Speed, and Minwax Oil Finish have all worked well for me.

Uberti used a poly finish, you need to strip that off.
I like water based paint striper like Stripeaze.

First coat and allow to loosen the finish the coat again and use 0000 steel wool
then neutralize with cleear water
allow to dry and use a fresh 0000 Steel wool to remove the wiskers

then test your stain for color (Fiebings is good) and cot the grips ..you may need to dewisker again

your ready for Tru-oil  or boiled linseed oil.

Ok Guys, I got em stripped, fitted, and sanded. I ordered med and dark leather dye. Now, do you swab the dye on the grips and wipe off(like stain) or just swab it on and let it dry??? Thanks for the help!!!

depends on what you want ...full strength dark will be very dark

I'd cut the dye ( Fiebings use alcohol ) 1 part dye to 4 parts
and test , use an absorbent cloth & gloves
you can add dye to your mix till you get the shade you want.

Thats why I went ahead and ordered the medium also which is probably what I will end up using. Lady said the dark could be lightened with denatured alcohol but I just went ahead and ordered both. So, wipe off or just swab on and let dry? I never dreamed leather dye could be used on wood...Thanks...Mike

I like to use an absorbent cloth, I have better area control
rather than the swab which tends to dob to much in a small area
and yes wipe it off... repeat if you wish

Looks good!
Last year I took the more modern finish off my 1851 conversion grip, stained it a bit darker, and then put on an oil finish. Like you, I am very pleased with the results.
