Hi All,

I am  very seriously thinking of modifying my Chiappa Spencer 56-50 rifle to compete in N-SSA.  I've read posts here on how I might do this, but wanted to solicit advice/thought on doing this.

Any observations would be welcome.

Pvt Greg,

I've got lots of bubble wrap ::) ::) . . . your best bet would be to contact John Holland, the Chairman of the N-SSA Small Arms Committee as to what modifications you would have to make . . . I'm pretty sure all of that has been mentioned on SSS before, and I believe there is a post by John as to what is wrong with the Armi Sport Spencer Rifle from what or how it should be . . . I'll try to locate it for you.

And here it is  ;D ;D  Check out the 4th post by John Holland, AKA Jobe Holiday ;D

But, contact John, just the same.

Bobby Hoyt could move the sight for you. Probably the easiest way to move the bands would be to get a new forstock from Dunlap Woodcrafters, which ought to have the bands in the right positions.

Herbert

Id you send the rifle to Bobby Hoyt get him to put a 1in 36 barrel liner in,you will realy notice the improvment in acuracy,S&S all so sell replacment stocks that are the proper dementionsbut they need finishing, not a big job

PvtGreg

Thanks Gentleman,

Here's my plan:

1) Check with N-SSA on what I have to do in case anything's changed since 2010.

2) Order a new fore-stock from Dunlap or S&S.

3) I have a gunsmith I trust to move the sight.

-This gets me the minimum.  I'd like to send it off to Bobby Hoyt, but I believe its an 18 month wait.

Herbert I've just gotten my 450grs from Montana Bullets, I'd like to see how my rifle does with them before I re-line the barrel.  I'm doing well on my 350s at 100 and not too bad at 200.

Herbert

The 450gr bullet will improve acuracy but at the cost of a lager rainbow trajetory, that is my main reason for getting my rifle relined as I use it as my main pig rifle ,the most BP powder I could get in the case with the 450gr bullet seated to a OAL of 1.67 was 35gr of FF Swiss ,this was a heavly compresed load that needs to be done with a powder compresion die(I modifyed my flaring die to be booth a compresion die and a flaring die)With the 1in 36 twist barell I can compress 45gr of FF and seat a NEI 395gr bullet at a OAL 1.65 no problem. With booth loads this is the maximum BP I can compress and they are strictly hunting loads as acuracy goes of a bit with these loads(seems you can only compress BP so much before acuracy sufers, hotter primers seem to fix this a bit ,I am still testing this idear)To get best acuracy with the 450gr bullet and BP i found by droping the powder charge to 32gr I got very good acuracy but as stated the cost was increased trajectory not a problem on the range were distances are known and sights can be set acordanly. The only smokless powder I have played with in the Spencer is Trail Boss as pressure could be a problem in the Spencer with some powders, but I would think there would be a load that could push the 450gr bullet safely at around 1000fps,though I would never use this in a original as I sure it would be more than they could handle
