Does my alias have to be a name?  For example.  I have seen DAKOTA DAN or DOC DAVIDSON and have even seen JOHNNY SHOOTEMUP.

What about a name like "ACES HIGH" or "DUECE OF DIAMONDS"

Would those be acceptable in the cowboy circles?

Abilene

dart: no it does not have to be a name.  In your examples, 1st Aces High.  There is an Ace High already, and an Aces High Gambler.  So you could pick Aces High if you add a third name after it.  As for the second one, if you spell Deuce correctly  ;) , there is a Deuce Diamondback, but Deuce of Diamonds is available.  Go to the SASS home page www.sassnet.com and then in the lower right corner under News/Info you will see "Alias Lookup".  There is good info there on choosing an alias and you can find out if your choice is available.  Or just click on this link to go directly to that page:

Looking at the various aliases that are already taken can also give you some good ideas.

Mine ain't.  A name, I mean.  Well, yeah, it is now, but it wasn't until....well you know.

It's a surveyor's measure, 220 yards, 660 feet, one furlong, an eighth of a mile, 10 chains.

I was born before they invented meters (metres if you don't speak American  ::) ) so I don't know what that is in old money.  ;D

We have given up on the metric system in some areas.  We still buy 2x4s and 6 inch nails and 4'x8' sheets of plywood.  I'm 70 and I still convert kilometers to miles, so I know how far someplace is.  I also still convert kilograms to pounds (1 kg = 2.2 lbs) so I know how much meat I am buying.

I remember buying gas in Pennsylvania and DC back in the 80's and the pumps were in liters.  That's when you folks were going to switch to metric, then wisely changed your mind.

So, Dart, you started this.  Are you getting anything out of it?

Be very careful because if you follow some of these threads AWAY from your original post you'll end like poor Alice, stuck in Wanderland (Spelled that way on purpose to show how some subjects get lost to the wanderings.) and you'll end up mad as the Hatter and his friends.

Yes, I have gotten a alias for myself.  I am now thinking of going with "Kilo Furlong" from "Metres, Pennsylvania" who is a "Surveyor" who shoots cowboys for fun after highjacking the threads on their cowboy hats.

;D ;D ;D

How am I doing?

If your not signing up to join SASS you can use any alias you like. Some names just sound like a name like Rusty Iron. I use three differant ones depending on who I'm shooting with. If you run into some one that's using the one you choose then just change or shoot it out with the varmit! ;D

I am completely loving all of this.  I shot my first match last weekend and had a blast...literally.  Looking forward to learning more.   :D

40 rods (220 yds/200m): the traditional range of offhand rifle shooting matches; in particular, Schuetzen.

"The Forty Rod Gun" is an EXCELLENT story by Lucian Cary - one of many about his character "J.M. Pyne", a very thinly disguised Harry M. Pope.

Yep, and twenty yard guns, too.  Lot of places had informal practice matches after church.  Just take off the jacket, get the rifle and fixings out of the carriage, and shoot while the women set up picnic lunches, and the kids played.

Well, I went with "Jokers Wild" or if I want to, I can spell it, "Joe Kerswilde"  I was going to go with "Ric Ochette" since my first name is Rick but if I just say it, people would think my name was "Rick O'Shea"

Jokers Wild seemed to fit also because I do like to joke around and have fun...

why did the chicken cross the road?

There was a CAS match across the road....that's why!

Yeah, I will keep my day job.  :P
