I am working on a scabbard for a friend of mine for her to give to her husband. I think he might want to use it as a case for his gun. Is there anything to treat the leather inside of the scabbard to protect the gun? What could I use to line it? I have not lined anything yet so I am  not sure how to go about it.

Finished scabbard here are the pictures

Hi,

I have been toying with making a rifle case/scabbard ... when I do, I plan to line it with some of the grey silicone-impregmated cloth that the sell for storage of rifles ,,, I believe they are called gun socks ...
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

On the few that I've made I used sythetic shealing. I think it works very well, cusions the rifle on all sidesand doesn't obsorb any mosture.

I did one for my revolving carbine, I did the enside of ~10 oz leather with gum tranganth after dyeing.  It came out real smooth and while it does not go outside for long periods, I have never noticed wear or moisture.

Pappy Hayes

Where do you get the synthetic shealing? How thick is it and how do you put it on?

Pappy Hayes

Also where do you get the gun sock material and how is it applied? I was thinking about telling my friend to tell her husband to get a gun sock and put the rifle in it then put it in the scabbard.

I started making leather by making scabbards for my own hunting rifles. I used two layers of 7-8 oz topgrain cowhide, smooth side of the lining to the gun.  Rather than stitch the seams, I laced them with 7-9 oz x 1/4-inch wide latigo lacing. I also made a boot for each one of the scabbards that slips over the stock end of the rifle and is retained by straps on either side of the scabbard. Not that it is recommended, but I actually had a horse roll over on top of a scabbard packing my scoped M70, and there was NO damage to the rifle. (The scabbard actually kept the horse from rolling over a cliff!)  I made a plug for the end of the scabbards, rather than just lacing around the end of the two layers. This was also laced in. When actually hunting, I left the boot off, with a flap covering the eyepiece of the scope and the rear of the bolt. The flap was secured by a snap, and the flap back secured by a retention strap. A quick forward and back motion of my hand (rifle carried on the "southeast side" of the horse. with the scope up and buttstock facing to the rear.
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

A scabbard for my Henry lever 22 is on my "to do list" and I thought I'd use shearling to line it as well.  I was thinking of using the spray adhesive for fabric that's available at Joannes (and other places) to attach it securely to the back side of the leather.  I suppose that  person could also use a heavy flannel material as well.

Go ahead and make one for mine while your at it ;D

Bunch a ole scudders!

I did a fringed sheath from Braintan and lined it with trade wool.   That is a direction to think of as well.

I like that idea MOGO,be nice if there was a way to open it up width ways too,lay some catriges on it and show it off while doin so. :)

Mogorilla how did you apply sthe gum tranganth? I am thinking of going that way this time since I did not figure lining in the price.

Mogorilla

I used the eco-flo Gum trag from Tandy's.   Applied it with a wool dauber in one direction.  rubbed it wth a smooth dowel in the direction until it started to slick up like an edge will.  Then went both directions.   did the one direction to get the fibers on the rough side to all go one direction (in this case, it was the direction the rifle would slid when being inserted in the case).   It took some serious elbow grease.

Graveyard Jack

I was thinking about making one and using a surplus military wool blanket for lining. Brand new and only cost $20. Might use it for lining soft pistol cases as well. Any reason not to? Once I get better at it, I might stock up on some trade wool from Crazy Crow, which is a lot more expensive.

this isn't a saddle scabbard, but it is braintan deer (from Braintan.com) with trade wool (from Crazy Crow), stiched the length of it with Buffalo leg sinew.  The beading done with linen thread.

In this photo, the top one is one I did from Elk.  I did not line it. I carry my Henry Rifle in it.  I modeled it after what I remembered of Ethan's in The Searchers.   The Braintan one was for a customer.  I sold it for $300 even.  He made out like a bandit.  I bet I made $0.02 an hour.  But he was happy as a bug in a rug.  I was sad to see it go, my Winchester 94 fit nicely.
