Custer County Nebraska Fair, 1903, gas engine powered machinery display.

We have the engine, the water pump, the lathe, the small grain thresher, but does anyone know what this is?

Sorry, I am looking for a straight answer, guesses don't help, it's been guessed about for years, now I want to know exactly what it is.

St. George

I wonder if it isn't as simple as a 'Gas-Powered Engine Display' - rigged out to show how efficiently a gas-powered engine could do multiple tasks?

Could be a salesman's gimmick used at County Fairs and such.

My oh my , don't you come up with the most fascinating questions.  Not a clue here.

Any idea who made all of this stuff?  Could help track it down.

St George may be right, if it's a cream separator why has it not been put all together before belting it up?

I'm looking things over and I think you are right Peachey, it is just not full put together and the box is tin plate rather tahn wooden like I though.

It's for sure a cream separator but parts are missing. Possibly a traveling display of sorts and they didn't fully assemble it.

Looks like there is something in the lathe to turn and demonstrate and a bucket under the pump. Maybe they didn't have a cow around to get milk.

Edit: There is another separator part with a spout that goes on top of the round part that catches the cream. That is laying in the top tank because I'm pretty sure that is it's spout sticking out where you can see it. There should also be another spout sticking out next to the oiler and a round shelf sticking out down on the frame to hold a pot. It is a Vermont United States model I believe. Others like International Harvester had more rounded tanks on the top.

They may be assembling or disassembling it.  Looks like all they did was remove the hand crank and add a drive pulley.

Didn't you guys read Rumplestilskin when you were kids? Its a powered spinning machine for spining straw (in the wooden box above) into gold. That's not a lathe either. It's a spool winder for the gold thread that comes out of the spining machine. It saved  lot of work  for that poor overworkd Princess.

The previous post is correct; it is a twine spinner.

No, it's a cream separator as some of us suspected. Just not fully assembled.

I've never seen a seperator with a square sided flat bottom milk bowl.

Now you have ;D

Do a google search for a U.S. Cream Separator because that's what it appears to be. I'm sure you will find plenty of images just like the one in the picture.

I agree most of the ones you see do have a round tank though. That is a fairly early model right around the turn of the century.
