This regards a Cattleman/Model P, but I think it probably generally applies to most Colt/Clones.  Anyway, my cylinder is "locking" on the second click, instead of spinning freely.  Which direction do I need to be looking here for the most likely culprit?

Thanks,
Hugh

Bolt.  It is dropping to quickly.  Either the leg that goes over the cam is bent inward a tad and is coming off the cam to quick or the leg is to short.  It would be more unusual that a bolt problem, but the other culprit may be that the cam on the hammer is worn.  Easy enough to tell.  Remove the back strap and trigger guard and pull the hammer back slowly and watch the parts cycle.

PF,  Thanks for the response.  Ordered a new bolt, took down and replaced.  No cure.  I have a pair of these, so checking the other gun, I cycled the hammer, then on the "broken" one.  There are four distinct clicks on the proper gun.  With the broken one, it goes from the "safety" to "half cock" with no click inbetween.  Does this indicate something else?

Thanks,
Hugh

The four clicks (sometimes there may be five depending on gun tune) are: first click trigger hitting safety notch; second click, trigger hitting half-cock notch; third click, bolt dropping onto cylinder; fourth click, bolt dropping into cylinder and trigger dropping into full-cock notch.  (The fifth click would be where there is a slight gap between the bolt dropping into the cylinder notch and the trigger dropping into the full-cock notch.)  From what you have said have you looked at the trigger?  If the tip of the sear breaks off the nub is usually to big to fall into the safety notch and even though it may be engaging the half-cock it isn't where it is supposed to be in the timing cycle because the trigger is to short.  Turn the gun sideways with a strong light behind it and slowly cock the hammer.  Watch the bolt movement.  If the bolt is dropping before the trigger hits the half-cock notch your bolt timing is way off.  Take the back strap and trigger guard off, shine a light into the area were the bolt leg rides on the hammer cam and slowly cock the gun and watch the parts.  You should be able to see what is happening and when it is happening.
