I have a  four foot shelf outside my kitchen window, gets full sun from about 11:30 am until the neighbor's house blocks it at around 4:40.  The window reflects a lot of light and heat, and temperatures get way up there.

My wife wants to grow herbs and spiced in containers  (Likesome h 10" diamter, 8" deep ceramic pots mostly) but neither of us inherited any agricultural talents (I used to look at the Old farmers Almanac for the pictures.) so I'm looking for help and information.  We have plants all around that thrive on neglect and abuse, sooooooooooo!!!

Can we grow stuff like rosemary, garlic, sage, dill, oregano, thyme, etc.?

Yep, they should do well or all of them except for perhaps the garlic, never heard of that in a pot, but I don't know why it wouldn't.

Forty rod, my wife bought some already planted, seeds in the pots (plastic), just add water type thing. They were at a local Lowe's if memory serves, and they did well.

Once ya transplant them outside don't let them grow over the fence, someone will see them ;D :o ;D ::)

Oh yea and if ya go to the craft store get some of those real light foam or plastic tamaters and tie on with green string~~

We actually put a garden window in one of ours in the dinning room. I grow 3 types of  basil, cat nip, parsley, thyme, tarragon, rosemary and some peppers. They all grow great however the cat nip is to keep my cats from eating the rest. The are impossible to keep out of it and found putting it in there they go for it.  ;D We use it during the winter months only and take the plants out during the summer.

Thanks kindly, folks.  Later this year I'll be back for info on a hot house arrangement in the hot tub shed in my back yard.  My wife's retiring the end of this month and it's payback time.  Now I get to make the honey do lists for her.

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Cat mint is one of four types of mint that one may find in an apothecary garden.
1, is pepper mint.
2, is spearmint.
3, lemon mint
And the 4th is Cat mint or cat nip

Garlic needs a shady cool place to grow.  It is a member of the lily famiy.  Most herbs were wild plants to begin with and do well in lots of different conditions.

Missed a digit.  11:30 is more like it.

Thanks for cleaning up my mess.
