"jock strap" holster

Is the "jock strap" laced or braded to back of the holster?  I've never seen a picture of the design, just the completed holster from the front.  There's a neat one on ebay right now made by El Paso Saddlery.
"There are those who argue that everything breaks even in this old dump of a world of ours. I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it

FWIW;  My EPS John Wayne  has the loop riveted.  I don't thimk there is any magic to it, just as long as the result works.  Packing Iron also has pictures and I'm sure I've seen a pattern in the Stohlman pattern-book available from Tandy.

If you like the price on ebay, don't hesitate as EPS holsters are great quality IMHO.

Some are riveted, some are sewn or laced. I saw an original that was sewn and riveted.

Here is my copy of it that a collector had at a show. One of my customers came to my table and said he wanted a holster like one at another table. The owner of the original holster was nice enough to let me measure, trace, and photo in order to make a copy of it. The original makers mark said Holtzer, Llano Texas.

Cliff; From what I recall from PACKIN' IRON, the one you just posted is more from the period than the ones currently made which seem to date from the early 20th Century.  The EPS one is of the modern style.

P.S:  I found this article by Phil Spangenberger.  He claims the jockstap design appeared in texas in the late 1890s;

Cliff - beautiful job!  That's a very inspirational holster!!

How is the "bottom strap" attached to the back flap of it?  I'm assuming it's riveted like along the sides.  Does it run through a slot in the back and then riveted (or sewn) or is it mounted to the front side of the back flap?

I have to believe that your custoer was tickled pink with it!

Thanks.   :)

The bottom strap wraps under and is riveted to the back skirt with a copper rivet, maybe two, I can't remember.

That holster I was told was estimated to have been made around the turn of the century. The more modern looking holsters that resemble S. D. Myers work came along fifteen or twenty years later from my understanding.

There is a big collector of S.D. Myers work that lives within 30 miles of me and has invited me to his house to look at his collection and has offered to let me make copies. It is on my list of things to do very soon.

Cliff, that is a very impressive holster!

I've not done any jock straps as I didn't like the looks of most designs.......I believe yours has sparked an interest in doing one soon!

That's fine work, Cliff. In some ways it's harder to make a good replica. Very beautiful.

Thanks Cliff for the info on how the bottom strap is attached to the skirt.  I've seen a very few jock strap holsters (originals) and of course the ones shown in Packing Iron . . . I never cared for most of them as it seamed like the bottom strap was always so long on some of 'em.  The one you replicated is a great design though and it just plain "looks right & good".  Thanks for sharing it with us.

And don't put off looking at those holsters . . . . we've all "put off" at one time or another and all of a sudden it's "too late".  Thanks again for the info!   :)

Cliff Fendley

Yeah your right, he invited me over a year ago and havent made it yet. He apparently has a large SD Myers collection and should be very interesting.

Outrider, come up this winter and we'll both go. :D I'm sure he would let us, he is a really nice fella. I can't find his card now, I might have to wait to the next gun show to get in touch with him again.
