Anson Mount's Remington

Now that Anson Mount is shooting a Remington .44 in the new episodes of 'Hell On Wheels', I like mine a whole lot more.

He says that gun safety is a lot more important on the set using cap & ball guns as they are all 'real' guns and he has a healthy respect for them even loaded with a blank charge. I regret that he will be doing the Clint Eastwood cylinder changing bit. Not historically correct, but oh, so cool .... ;>(

I've thought about it at times, but looking at that charged and capped cylinder reminds me too much of a grenade. Dropping one doesn't strike me as a good idea.

I was showing pics of my cowboy gun collection to a friend of mine, (a Cherokee woman), and though not real "gun savy", she pointed at the pic of my cartridge converted 1858 replica Remington and remarked what a beautiful gun it is.  I said wow...  you do have an eye for fine firearms.  I do love that revolver.  A pain in the neck to reload but a hell of a lot of fun to shoot!   8)

I popped the Kirst 5 shot .45 Colt cylinder out of my latest Pietta Remington .44 and put the cap & ball cylinder back in.

I them proceeded to shoot three consecutive 6 shot groups Duellist-style at 15 yards that surprised me. All were under 2", and right on point of aim.
I don't think I could have done better with a cartridge gun; ANY cartridge gun.

Yeah ... I want to see him do it with one of my Remington .44s after 3 or 4 cylinders have been fired. I need a mallet to tap the cylinder pin forward.
And what was that Reb robber doing with his Colt 'wedgie' in pieces? Was he doing the 'cylinder swap reload' as well, or did his gun just fall apart?

Pure Hollyweird that the Canadians have decided to emulate.  No basis in historical fact.  The bad guy showed just why it was never done during battle.

I too, am disappointed with the piddly blanks used on the show. Surely, they can do better.

I watch the show for the human drama, the ironic twists and turns of the plot. I'm surprised how many parallels there are in the story line to the actual building of the Canadian Pacific Railway - strikes and Indian problems included. The patience, forebearance and outright bravado of a few Mounties at critical times defused potentially explosive situations.

The fledgling Mounted Police had the unfortunate duty of acting as strike breakers as the railroad was deemed essential to the welfare of the nation. The railroad shantytowns and hordes of camp followers, whiskey peddlers and other low life types were the norm, making the job of 'keeping the peace' difficult.

The fact that we didn't have an outright Indian war is remarkable, especially after the Perce Nez and the Sioux crossed the Medicine Line to escape the vengeance of the US Cavalry. All of a sudden, there were many more Indians than ever facing off against a handful  of Mounted Police.

The 1885 Rebellion under Louis Riel was the 'Last Hurrah' for the Metis, who failed to enlist the full support of the various tribes. They had no hope of winning against the might of the Crown, but they fought valiantly for the justice of their cause. The CPR was completed just nine months before Riel was hanged, the days of the ox cart and canoe over.

Not hysterically coorect ?   Why ?   See the article by Spangenberger on page 19 of the May 2012 issue of True West.  I don't know how much of the "Pale Rider Reloading" was actually done, . . . but the extra cylinders to do it were available and often supplied with the pistols.
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

I believe there are even a couple of pics in the leather forum of original rigs with spare cylinder pouches.

Remington .31 caliber pocket pistols that is.  The Army and Navy Remingtons did not appear on the scene till the end of the Pony Express' existence.

What is it with all these non-histoicasl hand guns on this program?
I could get into the story line a lot better if what they were calling a Griswold was actually a copy of a Griswold & Gunnison Revolver, instead of an 1860 Colt Army with a brass frame. (which, of course, was never made!)
Do these types of historical discrepancies bother anybody else?
