Where do you buy your ammo?

I searched for past topics and can't believe you haven't talked about where you get your ammo for CAS?

I know that the SASS mercantile has cowboy loads and I know a lot of people reload ammo too.

I've got ammo from online sources, but can only find lead 158 grain 38 special. The speedier game loads of only 130 grains 38 special seem to be hard to come by for the same low prices.

As far as shotshells, I always thought birdshot was cheap and easy to come by until I got the tip to use low recoil. I just got some low recoil ordered from bassproshop.com. I'm still wondering if there's a better place to get ammo though for cheap.

Where do you get your cowboy ammo?

Get a Curio & Relic license. This will allow you to order from any great suppliers at a discount.  It also alllows you to buy older firearms and have them shipped directly to you.

To answer your question more directly here are a few good quality ammo makers and suppliers.

I do all my reloading now, but it took me about 5 years in CAS before I was willing to take the punge.  Good luck in your search and have fun.

I don't buy ammo anywhere, I roll my own.
I will no longer respond to the rants of the small minded that want to sling mud rather than discuss in an adult manner.

Thats the way most CAS shooters go.  Perhaps thats why no one discusses sources for readymade stuff.  I'm not sure where our new hands are coming from, but SASS was really a merger of interests between IPSC shooters(who were reloaders) and Buckskinners (who were also reloaders by necessity).  If you can afford to shoot regularly without reloading, you are indeed a lucky (and wealthy) man!)

I think the only time I ever used store bought ammo for a match(other than shotshells-probably from Wal Mart) was whern I bought a Uberti '66 carbine from a vendor at a match, and I wanted to use it right then! Might have bought a couple of boxes of .45 mainly for the brass after that(same rifle)

Pards,

The OP wanted sources for manufactured ammo.  He did not ask how to start reloading.  Not everyone wants to reload and some people can handle the cost of store bought ammo.  I think we should help new shooters by answering their questions and not trying to "one up" them.

That being said, Marthor, if you would like information on reloading there are a bunch of people here who can help you get started.

I do not roll my own.  I buy factory ammo from gun shops and sometimes on line or through the mail, like from the Sportsmans Guide.  More expensive than reloading?  Yes, so I buy a box or two each payday and when I'm ready to go shooting I've got more than enough to have a nice long day at the range.   8)

I also have stored up, at any given time, enough cowboy ammo in all three calibers I shoot, ( 45 Colt, 44-40, & 38-40) to attend a match.  Now if I could just get a weekend off at the same time a SASS match is being held around here.   ::)

I am not specifically pushing reloading, but;

- I find that shooting is much more affordable if I reload.

- I can shoot odd calibers that are otherwise hard to find ammo for

- I can tailor loads to my liking, using available & reliable data

- I find that shooting is much more affordable if I reload.

I buy my ammo already loaded by Load X in Santa Rosa, CA.  I get it at my local Sporting Clays Range as that is where our cowboy shooting range is set up.  I use 45LC and 45acp and they have both in cowboy loads which are nice.

Sounds like a few friendly cowboys were informing him on the advantges of reloading. I like it because when I need a box I go the gunshop (reloading room). No waitng and no shipping. ::)

Never bought ammo specifically for cowboy. 'Course I have reloaded for everything for over 45 years :o

Black Hills and Ten-X come to mind. good luck on that ammo.
