How About Posting PICS of Your Sixguns.....

Hey all,

I'm new here, but have LOVED Cowboy guns my whole life.  I never get tired of reading about them or seeing great pics of the Hoglegs that others own and enjoy.

I have never owned a SAA though I have wanted one for many years.  I finally have decided to start saving money and get one.  Hopefully this year sometime I'll have my first SAA.  Unfortunately it WON'T be a COLT, out of my reach at this point.

So if you all don't mind, how about posting some pics of your favorite sixguns?  What do you like and use....Colt, USFA, Uberti, Cimarron, or what?  I have been told by several knowledgeable shooters and collectors that if you can't afford the Colt or the USFA that your best bet is to stick with the Uberti's or the Uberti's from Cimarron.  Do you all agree with that?  If not, what would you suggest for those that can't afford a Colt or USFA?  Which one comes closest to replicating the 1st Gen. Colt while still being able to shoot and handle very well?

Lastly, I see that most companies that sell SAA's will not only have the basic lineup from Uberti or Pietta, but they will also have a "deluxe" model like the Smoke Wagon, Evil Roy, Etc..  Of course these "souped up" models are more expensive too.  Can you all tell me if it is worth it to spend the extra money on these "deluxe" models rather than buying the basic model and having a smith do the mods you want to it later?

I am NOT a competitor, but would like to try it sometime in the future.  Right now I would be using my SAA at the range and putting it on my side when I go bowhunting for hogs here in Texas.  I am not going to be using HEAVY rounds, naturally, but using factory loads that are well within the limits of the gun.  I know there are those that would suggest a Vaquero, but I want to get a SAA clone first, I just love those 4 CLICKS.  A Vaquero is also on the list to get.

Thanks for your time and any help you can share.

Well

Guess I will start this show and tell off for ya... The first pix is a GW2 with Turnbull CCH and my "albatross" an EMF 1892 with brass frame and 24" s/s bbl.

Nexd pix is of a pair of antiqued 1875 Remingtons with consecutive serial nos. with a Will Ghormley Jesse James rig that Brad Pitt wore getting ready for the movie.

I guess I really line GW2 as I have 7 of them, but I also have Colts, EMF Dakota (Jager model), Uberti and Taylors. and shoot just about all of them
I guess I don't shoot my "bbq" guns muck just cause they are sooo pretty they are a  pair of custom nickel plated GW2 with real elephant ivory grips from Boones Traders. here is one of them and the pix don't really do them justice.

rather than put all my guns up here why don't ya stroll over to my photo pages and see the guns, gear and the cowboy outfits that go with them. here they are:

Great looking stuff!  Yeah I'd say you like the GW2.  How do they compare to the better models of Uberti sixguns?  In looking at all these sixgun brands and models, I would say the majority of advice I have been given says to go with UBERTI.  I have had the GW2 come up more than a few times too though.  What's your thoughts on it if someone came to you and asked your advice on a sixgun to get into Cowboy shooting with and also use it as a backup when he's bowhunting Hogs?  I would want something nice, but I can't get a Colt or USFA.

Thanks for posting the pics.  I enjoyed them as well as your page with all kinds of great stuff.  You are a good photographer.  What kind of camera do you use?

Oh and I really like the Remington 1875.  I almost never see info or pics posted about them on several forums.  I have wondered why as they look like a great pistol.  Who know why?  I'd like to have one.

As you see I have some Ubertis and some Colts and some Dakotas. My main match guns are a pair of Taylors or a pair of EMF GW2..depends on my mood, if I am doing my Scout I use the Remingtons.

As for cameras, I used several Minoltas in 35mm in the old days...when I went digital I got a couple of different ones, but now I use a Canon SLR (esp. for my portrait work) when I do my hand held work I use a Nikon CoolPix Li10 or my wifes CoolPix LI20 (hers has 24x OPTICAL zoom. When I am shooting during a match and need compact I use a Nikon pocket size. I have had 2 years of photography at Mt SAC and even worked a semester with a 4x5 view camera and my instructors Hasselbadt. Thanks for looking at my work...look back on occasion as I add stuff to it often.

I like looking at Colt SAA's as well.  They are works of art.
Here is my Ainsworth Colt from 1874.

It is an original Ainsworth...well the frame, hammer, loading gate, and backstrap are.  The pistol came to me from Mexico that a field worker had on him.  All the springs were broken and the barrel was cut off with a hacksaw to 5 inches if you measured from the top of the barrel but 4 3/4 inches if you measured it on the bottom.  It had that much of an angle on the cut.  The ejector housing screw went into the barrel 1/4 inch and it was Mexicali chromed.  I got tired of looking at it and had Doug Turnbull rebuild and refinish it. I know it is sacrilege to refinish an old Colt, but I don't feel bad about this.
According to John Kopec, this pistol was issued to the 8th Cavalry, well at least the frame, hammer loading gate and backstrap was issued to the 8th Cavalry.

When a pistol has been butchered as much as yours was when you found it, I think that sending it to Turnbull was more like restoring a piece of historical art. Like cleaning and restoring the Sistine Chapel. It's just my opinion, but I think you should be commended and congratulated for restoring the Ainsworth.  Thank you for sharing the picture and history of that fine piece of history!

While it's true...  one should not restore an old Colt, I think in this case he made a wise choice.  I would have done the same.   ;)
