Can anyone explain to me why "steampunk" has any place in cowboy shooting?  What is it and does it really fit into SASS ?

Cohagen

Noz

It has the same place as Wild bunch.

Steampunk is based on several movies that are Victorian/Science fiction.

Wild bunch is based on the movie of that name.

Never heard of it.  OK, lets have cowboys vs. zombies and cowboy vs. aliens stages.

Steampunk is a popular "fashion", not really a fad.  The idea is to portray 20/21st Century techical concept and styles using 19th Century technology.  The results are off-the-wall, but interesting.

Here is the website for a recent convention that took place here in my hometown;

http://victoriasteamexpo.blogspot.ca/

Wild Wild West is one movie, another is that terrible flic, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

In these pages an example was posted of a cap'n ball revolver rigged to hold six entire cylinders mounted on a rotating disc to make a total of 36 shots.  Whether it was a workable concept is doubtful! However! It is somewhat related to our sport as we attempt to replicate the late 19th Century with modern technology thrown in from time to time (Like smokeless powder ???)

Don't need no Steampunk category.  Already got Wild Bunch and that's one too many for my taste.

We don't need a Steampunk niche on cascity either.  Finding examples at randon is too interesting 8)

I intend to offer "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Cowboys vs Zombies" stages at our club matches.

Why? Fun, and because 'Zombie' targets are available in pads and offer a 'no-shoot' target. We also have large cardboard 'Alien' targets used for a fun pistol match open to all categories. I had the pleasure of winning a pass with a 44-40 SA against Glocks, S&Ws and other 'bottom feeders'.

Killer Targets has an in house graphic artist who could probably make cowboy and Indian zombie targets.  Might be pretty cool for an October match.

I dont embrace steampunk as a viable part of CAS/WAS.   It has its place, but not with us.

However, I did go "off the reservation" a few years ago and wrote a historically based science fiction match for an October NCOWS match:

Well Pards,

It sounds wierd as hell to me,  but I think wildbunch is strange.  Its  not easy being a dinosaur.
Guess I'll stay with what I know, missin slow..

Bravo! Since you've done all the ground work, would you mind if I plagiarized your 'Alien Invasion' stages?

I get really bored with same old on big targets up close. I recently proposed a 'man-on-man' stage and was told that it was "too competitive" and only suitable for a side match.

I also get reminded that most of our shooters are past their prime (if they ever had one ...) and to keep athleticism out of stage design. That includes getting down and back up again without assistance.

PJ,

I am honored that you'd like to use them.  Consider them yours . . . Unless Speilberg or some other Hollywood bigshot shows up and decides to make a movie out of it.  In that case, I'd like 8% of gross film revenue and 5% on all the retail merchandising.   ;D

Pancho - Gracias, Senor!

I gladly acknowledge your filming rights and associated royalties. We will adapt your stages to suit our layout and targets. The reason I asked is that I have a CAS associate that is a published playwright with 30 plays to his credit. He has told me a little about plagiarism and copyrights.
We often use characters and scenarios from his plays and his alias is taken from one of them. He would regard it as a compliment if anyone based a stage on his scripts.

I'm still trying to decide if that press story is a well fabricated spoof. My gullibility is showing. I mean, if I read it on the net, it's gotta be the truth, don't it ...?

I can tell you that story was published in the Dallas Morning News.  I have a friend that pulled the microfiche copy at the Dallas Public library.
History Channel also did a show on the "Aurora Incident" a few years ago.  It was interesting to watch.

I recently saw that "Aurora Incident" epidode on History, too.

PJ Hardtack, I know what you mean by not being allowed to have stages with even the least amount of physical activity.   When I started in CAS we had stages where we had to kneel down behind cover, shoot, then stand and move laterally to another position.  Those have been barred as well as weak hand shooting.  When I did IPSC and UPSA combat shoots, you always had weak hand sections on a stage.  Try weak hand and a one handed reload sometime.
People wonder why we can't get younger shooters in to this game.

Do it and they will come.

My home NCOWS posse often does stages with reloads, derringers, shooting from cover, bullwhips, etc....  We have a healthy following that enjoy "reality based" scenarios, rather than the up close 10-10-4 speed dumps that have become so common now days.

I'm an IPSC 'burn out', one of the pioneers in fact, from when it was still "Combat Pistol Shooting" ala Jeff Cooper. Weak handed shooting was a strong suit for me then and is now. I shoot 'Frontiersman' double-duelist simply because I can and I enjoy the challenge.
I got into it by ordering a left & right pair of holsters instead of one x-draw. Best mistake I ever made since I enjoy weak handed shooting. I do some every time I go to the range.

As for derringer matches, there are so few Canadians 'grandfathered' (read as 'delayed confiscation) to now own 'prohibited' handguns (i.e. barrels 4" or less) that we no longer do them. Makes the world a safer and better place, dontchaknow ..... I have a beautiful Great Western derringer in .38 S&W that rarely gets shot these days.

Back when it was one pistol in SASS, I wanted to do complete reloads and was told that the skill level was such that it would have been unsafe. Huh? What in hell am I doing on a range with such incompetents that a reload would constitute a danger? Now we often see one or two round reloads.

A one handed reload with a revolver sounds a little dodgey to me, or did I misunderstand? I have never gotten past the idea of gun handling as a defensive martial art. I do my best when I approach a stage as a gun fight where I intend to prevail.
