Tried for a Gus crease on one of my hats. Does it need something? Is it too modern looking?

Opinions wanted.

How about a little "Scattergun Therapy" on it...for ventilation purposes...of course!

I'M KIDDING!

Actually it looks good, Rio.  Good job!

Forty Rod

I'd shuck the band and get something more period looking, then just wear it until it takes on some "character".

Fine hat and good design, 'cept it's too clean and perfect, and that band looks like some CW girl singer was involved in its design.

Silver Creek Slim

I agree. It needs more "character".
Mine has hamburger grease (steamin' accident while making supper ::) ), BP fouling from cases, horse knocked it off my head into the stall, dirty smudges under the brim, rained on numerous times, etc.

I agree with "Uncle Forty".  Chuck that band and get something different.  A braded horsehair band is always good.

A bit of black powder will help, I ain't got no hamburger grease in mine, but plenty of lard, butter flour and smoke from fannin' a fire. ;)

For hat band information got to:

Our friend St. George is as good a source as any one.

The band looks a little dudish rather, bbut some may want that look.

I also have hats I keep on the better side, but they still are allowed to mellow.  I have a $400 100% Beaver custom made hat.  The brim is saggin' a bit on the right side in the front and the left in back.  I could fix it, I have an electric steamer and stiffner about 5 feet away, but I won't cause that's from the way "I screw er down" when it's windy.

It looks kinda like a a combination of a pinched -front and Gus crease.  Not a bad look.  I'm in agreement with my pards that the band is probably needing to be changed.  As TAK said, there's alot of character in a braided horse-hair band.  Snake skin looks cool too, if you can find it.

Delmonico

I get in trouble on this one now and then, but if yer gonna have a snake skin band you should take it from the original owner.

Shape of the hat looks good.  Lose the hatband & maybe go with a horse-hair band, wear the hat in the rain a few times, toss some good old mother earth dust on it now & then and you got the ultimate original cowboy hat of the period! ;)

Forty Rod

If you get snake skin you may not want to wear it to California (Yeah, I know) because these environmentalcases here think snakes of some kinds are nearing extinction.   Like python.  Hell, you can't hardly find any native California pythons anymore.  Cobras, neither.

Just a fair warning: some rattlesnakes are on the "endangered list", too, and things could get snotty if you have a snakeskin band..

I fergets that, heck we got's two down here in SE Newbrasky that they have tought bout protectin' on the state level, but that goes over as well as protectin' prairie dogs. ;D

Hat looks good.  Yep, lose the band.  Big question is how does it look on you?  Some folks need a tighter front roll, some flat, high crown or lower, etc.  A copperhead skin would make a nice band on that color hat.  My brother had a real nice copperhead band for years.  It was easy to come by, he just looked under his boot.  Before anyone gets concerned, in East Tennessee copperheads are the good Lords answer for movin' targets.  ;)

The Arapaho Kid

I'm sorry pards....I have a real thing about using exotic skins for anything.  I don't like it.  I'm just real sure those critters were more than happy to give up their lives so Tony Lama could use their skins for a pair of boots for some dude that ain't never sat a horse!  Cowhide is one thing.  Exotic skins are another.  I will not buy anything made from an exotic skin and that includes rattlers.
Working cowboys don't wear boots make out of Python skin!

Delmonico

If'n ya read my post I said don't buy a rattler for a hat band, you should remove it from the original owner.  Myself I really don't spend a lot of time lookin' for them, but I also will not tolerate one in my camp.  If you do that is your choice.

Yep! You were all right about the hatband. I have shed that and now looking for a horsehair type. I also did some reshaping of the crown. I think it looks better now, but will repost a pic when I get a new hatband.

I'm not totally sure that I am a "white hat" type of person. We'll see.   ::) ;D

This is my hatband.  It's an inch wide and the picture colors don't do it justice.  IT'S NOT YELLOW!  It's kind of a Palomino blonde.
