The Drill Instructors I knew in the Army Reserves, used Cheaphair spray on their "Smoky the Bear " hats, to stiffen the brims.

Jesus my eyes are gettin bad,how did that metal thing get in there. When i get those little spray bottles of stiffner,i pour them into old windex bottle so i can spray more one at one time, works real well but at 8.00 a bottle ya have to be carefull.

Great find, Rick.  Certainly there are many possibilities for shaping it, and everybody has their own taste.  But I gotta say I really like that open crown flat brim look, especially with that hat band.

Rick,
What do you use to steam your hats?

GunClick Rick

An old tea kettle right now and i have one of those hand held steam irons that blasts a puff of steam out when you push a button, but it spits water drops too so isn't that good,it has a brush you can remove,i use it mostly for cleaning,i going to get stiffner today.I put the stiffner in an old windex type spray bottle, steam shape spray, steam again spray again making sure to get an even spray over that hat.

Delmonico is probably alot better than i as he makes his living doing such,i wish i had a pro steamer, even a used one is pricey~ If i see a hat on a western that i like i will try to make one like it..I have a bag of little toy letters that i use to make a roll :D

Really nice had Rick. I prefer the flat top Eastwood type hats from his movies. I bought one recently with a pencil roll 3 1/2" brim that I change to match his using a pressure cooker for the steam and my hands with the counter top for shaping. It turned out pretty good also. The only thing I would change on that hat is the crown I would rather have about 3.5 inch instead of the 4.5 it is now.

Yea the first roll i did just by wetting the brim folding the edge over and ironing it down,it comes out real wobly but you keep steamin and shapin and it finally gets there,it's works if you want that i did myself look. There is a pencil roller you can buy and it is a nice contraption, but 185.00 or more last time i looked.

Since you like to haunt thrift shops, look for an old vaporizer. The old ones that you used to put Vicks in to clear up you sinuses. I started out with one of them I found at a flea market and it will work pretty well for steaming a hat.

Had one for awhile that was glass, pretty old,but it got plugged up somehow and i messed it up by drilling the hole bigger.I have a couple newer ones here,i'll get one out and try it.Almost got a pro one from Western Wearhouse when they closed up,someone bought it before i got there, they were selling everything off.
