Need info about northern Arizona and New Mexico.  Looking for moderate sized (Under 200,000) city with climate similar to S. California, affordable living, conservative atmosphere.

Thanks.

There's only one city in New Mexico that does not meet your population criteria, and that is Albuquerque.  Next largest city is Las Cruces, with only 75,000 or so. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexico. Our daughter lives in Las Cruces, and we're out there three to four times a year and really like the city, the people, and the food.  Real estate prices seem to be escalating pretty fast, with a good many Californians movin in.  An awful lot of the unimproved land in the area is government owned, and acquiring acreage that is available can be pretty expensive.

Forty Rod, I know of what you speak. I moved to Bakersfield this year. The whole climate here is pro gun and it is as close to moving out of state as it gets. Unfortunately, it is still in California and we still have to put up with the general political atmosphere that prevails in this state.
I am sticking it out and am putting up a fight. Among all the people moving out are some of the very ones that ruined this state in the first place. If there could be a turn around in Sacramento, then I still think that California has it all.
Stay away from trendy places to move to would be my suggestion. I have heard a lot of the lefties like places like Taos, Prescott and such.
I hate to hear of good folks giving in, it lets them win.

Forty, you might want to give the Silver City, NM area a good look.  An old friend of mine lives(d) there, and even after his health went to pot, he still wouldn't leave the small town life.  Another area is Prescott, AZ, and the Williams/Chino Valley area.  There are some small towns up in the foothills, northwest of Phoenix and soutwest of Prescott, too, that might have a suitable climate.  Don't forget the Sierra Vista/Tombstone region - but the border is a problem there, so, maybeso, maybenot.  I won't bad mouth you for thinking of this, either; I used to say I'd not leave, but the right opportunity came along, and ------- "we gone - bye bye."

Spoke to several friends who live in Arizona & New Mexico and they said lot's of folks was complainin' about too many Kalifornians comin' to their states & didn't want anymore.  You may want to check with the Governor in each of these states before ya make yer' move! ;) :D

Forty Rod

I ain't a Californian.  I'm just passin' through...for the last 31 years.

If'n ya wern't lookin' for a warmer climate pard, I'd tell ya ta buy the house two houses ta the west of me.  Nice quiet old neighborhood that most of the rest of the city forgot is here.  The weather won't leave ya bored, 105 some days and 20 below others. ;D

Some poly-tic problems, but not like you deal with, some want to close the 1 room school districts in the state, that has a few people almost up in arms.  Our CCW permit will most likely pass next year.  Most folks that move in from yer area complain the fresh fruit ain't as good, but 'specially if we hit some small town lockers that still butcher their own, the beef more than makes up for it. ;D  The local state Peta organization has less than 25 payin' members and if they interfere with a hunter, they go to jail. ;D

Yeah! I live on the outskirts of Mesa and Apache Jct. and there is too damn many people here! Freeways and traffic are crazy! I've been lookin' to relocate to a less populated area in the next few years.

We're getting the wrong kind. It's mostly the liberal types that want to change AZ into another CA.

Nobody wants to admit it, and the developers want to keep it quiet, but AZ is going to have MAJOR problems with water within the next 10 years. Some areas are already having "fissures" and causing major damage to fairly new homes, because of the ground water being pumped out faster than it can replenish itself. There is a whole developement of homes about 40 miles west of Phoenix that are sold, but can not be occupppied because the water cannot pass the tests required.

All of these problems are just the tip of the iceberg. If they keep building like they have in the past 15 years, we will definitly see some bad problems.

Hey, Rio, what did they do with that old west town that burnt a year or so ago? Last rumor I heard was the restaurant was still going. Did a developer gobble it up????.........Buck 8) ::) :-\

Forty Rod, I was breezin' through the latest Chronicle and came upon the SASS Japanese division article. Kinda scary to think about. Not the fact that Japanese are as infatuated with the old west as the rest of us, but that they have to hold matches shooting balloons with  CO2 pellet guns. Well, unless there is more of a fight, California will head along that trail if the antis could have their way and shortly thereafter the rest of the country too. I hope I am too old to ever see a sad day like that, but I vote for the folks that will uphold my way of thinking as few of them as there is..

Del,
If I could blast the missus and her mom out of this state with anything short of a tactical nuke, I'd make an offer on that house tomorrow.  I know I'd be able to buy just about anything outright and still have a VERY healthy bankroll after the smoke cleared so I wouldn't have to be in too much of a hurry to find a job.  Any way, it's a nice dream.  Maybe it'll come true one day.

You could move to Elk County. :)

5 towns in all and we make up the county seat with Howard having 800 people..( give or take 20) in our town..
You can carry your gun ..loaded if you want to.. in your gun rack in your pick-up seat. No body cares.
Don't ever have to lock your house or your truck, or your barns or anything.if you don't want to.
Quiet at night with the stars blasting out all over the skys, and night sounds from the critters until early morning..
Great hunting and fishing just a few minutes away in any direction.
The gun owners are about 95% of the county's population, and our kids are taught to shoot and handle a gun and bait a hook before they start school.
Real estate is still pretty reasonable.
We have all 4 seasons of weather..sometimes spring and fall being the shorter of the 4.
No Walmart, no movie house, no fancy eatin' places.. but we do have a courthouse, a post office and a drug store, hardware store, filling station and are finally getting a small grocery store that will sell at least the staples.

I wouldn't live anywhere else in the whole wide world, even if someone paid me .

( Want me to start looking for you a house here Forty??) ;)

It is almost like Cas City but without the Marshal....  ;D

We do have a night watchman and the county sheriff.

Seriously, I agree with Marshal'ette. It is the best place to be.
