Good news for me! After 2 years of work getting in the way, looks like i'll be attending the AZSA 2012 World Championship.  My stepson and I will shoot and my spouse will watch.  We're very excited and starting to gather the necessary gear.  We have everything it's just a matter of getting organized.

Where in Colorado is the match being held and what is the weather usually like at the end of August ?

Does anyone have any information on hotels/motels nearby?

Any match info or tips would be appreciated.

TIA,

Kevin

Bat,
Please describe the long range events for those of us who haven't been to Byers before. Is it a paper match or steel? I'm wondering if I bring my Krag if I should bring lead or jacketed bullets.

The long range events will be run by Frank Hamer AZSA #64 (I think) SASS shooters may know him as Dutch Al.  He hasn't shared his final plans with me but we have talked about using the silhouette range.  I would expect the bolt gun matches to be a little longer range, and semi autos levers and pumps to be a bit closer.  We also talked about using even closer or bigger (or both) targets for the carbines.

We have AR500 steel targets so you and use FMJ rounds if you like.  By all means bring the Krag, I came in 2nd (my son John Smith AZSA #12 came in 1st) in a shoot off last year with a burrowed 1903 (Hustler's) shooting surplus ammo.

The Colorado Rifle Club (where we shoot) also has a 1000 yard range with pits but I don't think he will be using that range for this match.

And that includes .45 FMJ hardball in the main match?

Bat 2919,

Is 30 Carbine factory FMJ good for the main match?  My son has an M1 Carbine he wants to use.  My concern is about the velocity.

Thanks in advance!

Enforcer,

The quick answer to your question is sorry but no, the 1400fps minimum stands.  We knew this question would come up when the dates were changed to 1949 and then the caliber was reduced to .30 to allow the 30 Mauser in the Broomhandle.

We (AZSA) have had more questions about this same subject in the last month than I can count.  Let me see if I can put this subject to rest for everyone right now.  An M1 Carbine shooting factory 110 Gr. FMJ Ball round has a listed velocity of 1990pfs.  The average steel target placement in a main match caper on our range (CRC) for long guns is about 15 yards.  I'm sorry but even if the steel will take that I don't want to be standing that close to the steel (well copper) rain all day.  The last thing we want is for someone to get hurt.  The topic of the proper combination of bullet weight and spring rate has been the topic of some lively discussions around here and I suspect that it's only a matter of time before some enterprising mug solves the problem of getting a M1 Carbine to function below 1400fps.  Let the arms race begin ;)

Thanks

Thanks Bat, I had suspected that the 30 Carbine was too fast.  We'll go with the Thompsons instead! ;D

Hi

Isn't a .30 Carbine the wrong (next) era for Zoot Shooters anyway?

Actually the time period is from about 1920 to 1950.

I see that additional family members are discounted. I'm wanting to send in my registration, but I don't know yet if my son will be able to attend. Should I go ahead and send in mine then send in his if he can come and pay the discounted rate or should I wait and send them all later?
