I finally picked up a Uberti 1860 "Civilian". It has the brass back strap. Should I use Birchwood Casey Brass Black to blacken the back strap? Have any of you use this product before?

I haven't used it extensively but I have some. Regular cold bluing (touch up bluing) will blacken brass too.

WHY ? .   Why bother ?   Let the brass get dirty from powder fouling just like the trigger guard.

I bought a brass framed '58 that it had been used on.  Looked like the pistol had the "Black Death of the Middle ages". Yuck.  Cleaned it with "Brasso" then shot it some to get fouling on the brass and look like a pistol shud look.    :)

Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

I believe all original Colt 1860's had blued iron back straps, but I've decided to leave it as is. When and if I find a steel back strap I'll try to change it out..

Actually, to my surprise, the very first Armies had brass Navy grip frames.  I would actually like to make one like that one day.

I had a pair that I had the back straps and trigger guards nickel plated.  Looked great, didn't cost all that much, and I sold them just yesterday.  I'm suffering seller's remorse no end.

I've done it and it looks good for a while, but it doesn't wear well. I have a copy of Clyde Baker's Modern Gunsmithing that has several recipies for brass black, and other colors too, that I'm thinking about trying out. Gonna try to simulate CCH on brass, so, this could get interesting...
