I reckon I'll catch it the next time around...had too much to do today, got a little too hot cleaning out the old garage with the grandsons, just going to bed and maybe catch it on the DVR...
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

I just watched part of the first episode on history.com. Within 10 minutes I already saw Costner pull a brass frame Remington revolver.  ::)

Never made a Remington brass frame. Griswold and Gunnison made a revolver that was based on the 51 Colt design that had a brass frame. Now Pietta makes and Cabelas markets other brass frames that never existed as being Confederate models  ::)

I wish movie producers would hire someone with some historical knowledge on the equipment they use in their films. How hard would it be? There are reenactors and history buffs everywhere like on CAS City here that see things like this at first glance but movie producers can't find just one person. :-\

That said I am enjoying the series, I have watched the first two episodes and have the third recorded on my satellite so I can watch it first chance I get.

Well, Spiller and Burr did make a Brass framed version of the Whitney revolver.   I saw Costner pull that out and grimaced and then hoped it was .36, so I could pretend it was a SPiller and Burr.  I also saw a brass framed colt copy though.  While Griswold and Gunnison made a few brass framed navy copies, I am not holding my breath that it was one.   I did like the fact that there was a real mishmash of long guns, yellowboys, 73s, a springfield, and a sharps.  Probably a few more.  Like Boothill Bob, would love to know where they got the leather.   Just guessing it might have been in Europe.  It is filmed in Romania, and at least 2 of the principal actors are English and when Costner did Wyatt Earp, he had to get his period clothing and some props from England since Tombstone was being made and already grabbed them up.

All he had to do was look here or ask KT ;D :)

The brass frame Costner pulled looked more like a Remmy than a Spiller and Burr to me. I saw the Colt brass frame but couldn't tell if it had a round barrel or octagon. The G&G's I've seen have round barrels rather than the normal octagon of the 51 navy.

Pietta does make a pretty good copy of the G&G now.

The holster Costner is wearing is typical styling of Kansas area late 1870's or later. How do they account for a holster from there wound up in the hills of eastern Kentucky or West Virginia?

That type holster didn't exist until nearly fifteen years after the civil war.

I would say Tom Selleck is more particular for the period and works in interesting firearms. I would also say that directors and actors could care less and think it will not impact the potential auidience. This is evidenced by the mounds of 92s without fore ends trying to look like their older brother.
Speaking of Costner, who watched Dancing with Wolves? Especially the scene of Costner on his horse with the Henry and the loading tab was flush with the receiver as in EMPTY!!  And it has been said that you could esily kill a buffalo with it. As long s you stick it in the ear and pull the trigger. Much less him stopping the bufflo from goring the kid. What, maybe a hundred yards?
Tombstone paid attention.

That be true Cliff but the majority of the show would have taken place 1880 and 1892  Ellison the brother was killed in Kentucky 1882 and the raid on the McCoy cabin would have been January 1888.

I would think it would be harder to create a film with totally accurate items when it covers a period of 50+ years versus say a movie that takes place in less than a two year period.  Still no excuse to use items that totally did not exist.

I'm pretty sure he was wearing that holster in the scene after the war when the caption said 1870 or so. I also saw some guns that looked a lot like 94 Marlins in one of the gun fights that was in the 1888 time frame. I know it's about impossible to make one 10% correct but I felt it had way more inaccurate items then some other films and this one was History channel. I could pick things out in almost every scene.

Anybody else notice the scene with the donkey in front of the steam engine running the sawmill? Then when Costner told the boy to shut it down there was a sound effect like an old gas tractor turning off. I would have expected to hear steam escaping.

All in all I really enjoyed the series even though I'm critical of the correctness of the props and gear. I just couldn't help but wonder why they seemed to go through extra trouble on things like the sawmill scene to make it look and sound wrong.
