I don't remember where I got this picture but it's the only one I know exsists of the Henry box.  Personaly I think the artist got it wrong as this box would be too heavy when fully loaded to go on a belt, it must have had a shoulder sling on it somewhere.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a handsome, and well preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming...."WOW!... What a ride!"

The sketch is from Todds "Military Equipage"

I think I posted it on the Henry Site some years ago as well.

Geez,

I wish they ever made them for Schofield Ammo .... I would make a leather one and it would hold a whole days ammo!

Here's another idea.

Use a Spencer Blakeslee cartridge box with 45 cal tubes, either 6 tube or 10 tube type.
(round count will vary with type of cartridge, 45 Colt thru 44 Russian)

If  the box is in 56 cal., take a tube that fits 45 / 44 cal. ammo, fill the tube & slide it into the 56 cal tube.
Of course everyone knows to be careful when loading a Henry or Spencer.

Currently found them for sale here, http://www.ssfirearms.com/search.asp

Prices & quality vary from what I've seen $95 - $395. for a 6 tube.

If I am understanding and counting right, the basic combat load w/ the cartridge box illustrated was 140 rounds?

Sean Thornton

The 50 round boxes was more common during the Civil War. While there was never any "basic" load for the Henry rifle most probably they carried in multiples of 50 or around 150 rounds but then resupply was general close by as evident by reports. Frank Orcutt fired over 400 rounds at the Battle of Alattoona Pass which was around 5 hours of fighting.
