Is this Possible?

Free hand, I read it as 18X18 or so, 18 square inches would be almost impossibe to see at that range.  Also Mr. Hand, did ya notice how many who didn't beilive it possible, (the original question) raised their hands and said, yes I have good vision and a save place to watch bullets strikes and still don't belive possible.   ;D

If you have any kind of decent knowledge of external ballistics you will know that the velocity of a fairly heavy handgun load is similar to a BPC rifle and the secional density of the bullet, hench the ballistic coefficent is at least half.  Divide what a good Roller, Sharps or High-Wall can do by half and you have a good idea of what one can do.

Del,
I have to say that your observation sounds logical to me.

One thing many people don't realize is that a High Speed 22 LR when fired out of a rifle has around the same velociry, ballistic coeffiant and trajectory as a magnum handgun with a heavy bullet.   Remember the 22 LR was developed as a 200 yard target round rather than as a small game round or a cheap plinker, that came later, the first rifles in 22 LR were built by Stevens and were off hand target rifles.

These of course with their longer siting rasius are much easier to get proper sight alignment with, but with most open sight on a standard 22 rifle one can make hits way out there, provided one can learn trajectory and hold over by being able to watch where the bullet hits.  This is perhaps the key to learning long range shooting with any firearm, one needs to be able to see the mistakes to learn what to do to correct this.  This is perhaps why those who don't belive these things are possible don't belive, they have never had the chance to try them where you can see bullet strikes and learn how fast it is to learn corrections. ;)
