I just bought a bowie knife and need a period correct sheath to put it in.

I don't want anything really fancy, just something to go along with my rig. The knife is a Marbles bowie I bought off of e-bay for $35.00. It has a blade that is just under 7 inches long. It is just under 1 and 1/2 inches wide.

My belt is a 3 inch wide with bullet loops that make it around an inch thick. The color should be a somewhat dark brown.

Anyone have anything like that they would be willing to sell for a decent price.  :)

Thank you.

A custom made sheath is going to cost you much more than the cost of the knife....however if you want send me a picture .  At any rate I would need the knife to fit it properly.

Agreed. Given the logistics of your situation, I'd suggest making something yourself. It's really not difficult, especially if you're not looking for anything elaborate.

Chuck Burrows also has a sheath making video available.  If you took the route of making your own, it would only be practical if you do not need to buy anything other than the actual leather necessary and obtain it in an almost exact quantity, pretty tall order!  Why even the how to videos and books could cost more than the knife?  Check for a local guy who does this as a hobby and perhaps he would take on the job with leather from his scrap box at a reasonable price, otherwise, welcome to a great hobby yourself  and we will be glad to help you get started.  There are several free sources of basic how-to that can be found on the internet if you decide on this route.

PS:  I guess we should also have asked the price range you are talking here as that is very pertinent to your first desire?

I made the jump and bought a bunch of tools to make my own sheath. I never worked in leather before but I figured what the heck. I made a sheath for my Marbles bowie. It was a fair attempt and the sheath will do the job. It isn't as pretty as I would have liked it to be. The staining of the leather didn't turn out quite like I wanted but it will work for my needs. Here are some pictures of the sheath and knife.

I like it, too. The knife looks a lot like my German-made Linder...my second favorite belt knife.

Thanks gents. It was fun to make and like I said it does what it was intended to do. It holds my knife and keeps it safe.

I like the knife too. It's a perfect size and weight. It's sharp enough to shave with too. But I'll stick to my straight razor for that deed.  ;)

All of the tools and leather I used I bought at the local Hobby Lobby. I doubt this will be my last leather project but I don't think I'll be as good as most are making leather items. I'll just toy with the hobby and make what I need.

Looks good! I hope you got vegetable tanned leather. Chrome tanned leather WILL eat up your knife. Even with vegetable tanned leather, don't store your knife in the sheath long-term.
