OK, Now that I am growing in my affection for the dark arts I am rapidly going through the Goex I have on hand. I am down to a couple of pounds. That is no where near enough. I see that Powder Inc has no Goex FFg or FFFg in stock right now. They do have Kik. What the heck is that? Is it any good. I can certainly wait for the Goex to return. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

KIK!!!

:) ;) :D ;D

I tried KIK recently and am extremely happy with it, I also like Diamondback.  I find GOEX to be too dusty, dirty, and fouly.  I'm told it's due to the graphite they included in the mix to repel moisture.  Tried Diamondback, then KIK, and found both of them to burn cleaner, leaving less mess for me to cleanup afterwards.

Prefer KIK to Diamondback, found it to be more accurate somehow.

But that's just my $0.02, you're mileage my vary.
God forgives, I don't........

KIK is a very clean burning powder, it also delivers good velocity and accuracy. I have not shot any of it the small cartridges, but have went thru a case of it in the 45 and 44 sharps. And just ordered some more this afternoon.

I've got 10lbs of KIK coming today at $16.40/lb....less dirty that GOEX.

Noz

The only reason to buy GOEX over KIK is that GOEX is American made. I like the KIK.

Funny how UPS just leaves 10lbs of black powder sitting on the front steps in the hot sun  :o

The KIK that I have from Powder Inc is lot number 3910 . It shoots and cleans as well as Swiss, it just will not shoot as many rounds before fouling out when compared to the Swiss. It out performs the standard Goex by leaps and bounds.
I'm wanting to do some side by side when it is compared to the old lots of Goex Express and Goex Cartridge.
The accuracy in my 44-40 revolvers and 1873 Uberti rifle is very close to Swiss performance.
I liked it so much after my first order that I made another order so that i could be assured it was from the same lot number.
I use Diamondback for my SASS shot shells as they don't require a top grade powder to perform in SASS. I also shoot 65 grain loads and don't want to waste my KIK for that job.
Did I say it was great stuff!!

I've used KIK in the past with good results.  Nowdays I usually buy what Grafs has on hand at the lowest price though.

You cowpokes having "fouling out" issues all shooting 24 or 30 inch rifles?

I have never had a "fouling out" issue with any of my cowboy rifles, carbines and short rifles, with GOEX, Scheutzen or Diamond Back. I did not have foul out issues with APP either.

Of the three GOEX is dirtiest with Diamond Back cleaner and Scheutzen cleanest.

I am just curious.

BTW - I have never seen KIK powder available locally.

I have fouling issues using shuetzen out of a 32 inch barreled sharps.  No problem if I use a lube cookie
Do not seem to have the issue with a 26 in barreled rolling block.

Pony Racer, KIK is sold by Powder Inc and others in the BP industry. It's actual cost is only $10.50 a pound which is an excellent buy. If you add the shipping and Hazmat which is true of all BP orders then the price is about $15 a pound.
What a lot of people fail to understand is that the price shown by Powder Inc. is the final price with everything included. When you look at other sources they have to add the shipping and Hazmat charges.
Fingers, I like Grafs and they are good people to buy from. If you live to where you may do a walk in then they would be the place to buy from.  I know you are from that area so that must be what you were saying as the price of $10.50 for KIK is very cheap until it has to be shipped.
Pony Racer, I've never had a fouling problem with any BP I've ever fired. By that I mean the hard crusty rings that shooters complain about. When I spoke about the KIK in my posting I was also including the longer rifles which are fired by my pards. The ones who shoot the 24 and 30 inch barrels do have problems. It's from the lube running out because of the long barrel and the type of powder that is being used.
I've used the short barreled rifles most of my life and not just in SASS. The reason is that in Louisiana the woods are very thick and will kick your butt with long barreled guns.
We all know that the sport of SASS is much faster with the short barrel and I use a 18 1/2 inch barrel for that. It would be hard for me to ever have a problem because of our very high humidity most days.
I did however feel that when posting a report that would be read by people from many different areas that is was best that I include the fact that some fouling is possible. It all depends on your equipment, type of load and location.
It's my feelings at this time that KIK is the best BP on the market for Price, Accuracy, cleaning and overall results.
I do believe Swiss is the best but it is double the price and with my pocket book I will have to stay with KIK for as long as it is available.

Fairshake thanks for the indepth reply.

I can drive out to Winchester, Va when visiting my folks outisde of Leesburg, VA and pick up a case of Diamond Back for 250.00 (10.00 a can) with no hazmat or shipping fees.

I was buying Scheutzen before that from same vendor and by the case it is still cheaper than Goex.

He might be willing to bring in KIK - I will ask next time I pick an order up.

My long brreled rifle have done pretty good with up to 20-25 rounds with no fouling issues noticeable including my 43 spanish full length military musket.  However, I include a wad/lube cookie under the lubed bullet to make sure I am good.

I  haven't noticed any fouling in either my 24" Henry or 1873 rifles with Goex, Scheutzen, or Diamondback when using the Big Lube bullets.

Sodbuster, Read my posting and you will find where I said it all depends on" type of load, equipment, and location". That covers your big lube bullets in the type of load. You don't have a location that I could see as that also plays a big part.
The Big lube bullets work for SASS and other close in shooting.
They fail very quickly at long range shooting and are not the bullet of choice.

I have been using KIK 3F in all my shotgun loads and find a greater ease in cleaning the barrels after a shoot.

Spray about four bursts of windex per quarter side  and a wet paper towel after 20 minutes and it cleans right out, even with plastic wads.

QuoteI do believe Swiss is the best but it is double the price and with my pocket book I will have to stay with KIK for as long as it is available.
Some additional information about KIK and Swiss ...
KIK - I was concerned the 2010 shipment would be the last because of their being in bankruptcy.  Not true.  Jerry Dean at Powder Inc informed me a new shipment is on it's way now.  The 2010 shipment was 70,000 lbs but Western Powder Inc uses KIK FFg to make their Blackhorn 209 powder so they must have a need for more
Swiss - Was told that the wage rate in Switzerland has been increased and there is a good probability the price of Swiss in the US will increase accordingly.  So, if your a Swiss fan, stock up now
For price and quality, based on my reload accuracies and the testings done - KIK is my powder of choice.  Further, would really like to know if this year's lot is better than the March 2009 lot (2010 shipment) but my 2010 powder inventory isn't depleted yet

And to add another comment - Western Powder Inc (importer & distributor of KIK) and Hodgdon (owns Goex) are banging heads to be the Number 1 powder supplier in the US.  Wano (makes Schuetzen) owns the European market so they won't be getting into the dog fight.  But they did re-formulate the powder in 2009 that produces an 8 - 10% increase in velocity
