The antique tools are prohibitively expensive here in Australia. Most antique dealers don't really know what they do, but they know they are popular, so they charge accordingly.

I saw my mate roll crimp and he put a tiny bit of lube from his finger on the mouth of the hull, stopped them grabbing.

I bought a roll crimper from precision and a hull clamp thingo as well. Mine has a knob and that nifty quick clamp unit with th ered handle is obviously a later model. MIne works well, but is a bit slower than I would like.

That wooden one is nifty!. I am going to make one on a wooden base with a couple of ribs which will engage the slots in my drill press. Very neat! Thanks.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

Noz, If you don't have good results with the set up then go to Ballistics Products to see the hull vise.
I have 4 of the old style roll crimpers and although they will work, it's not as good or as tight of a roll crimp as these tools were designed for paper hulls and not plastic. I can do 4 boxes on my drill press before you can finish one box with the old style tool.
The type of cutter that is used also makes a huge difference.
All of the postings that are giving the exact size that the hull needs to be can make things much easier by saying all that needs cutting is the old crimp. Once that is cut and you have a new surface to crimp you are ready.
I purchased two cutters before finding the best one.
The one sold by Precision Reloading is the best and fastest and it is called the D-Loader. It's made of wood and needs to have the 12 ga. hull adapter to work. they are sold separate. The cutter sold by BPI and is made from plastic is not worth the time.
I have it and the adapter and it still cuts at a angle.
The D-loader cuts so fast and easy that I bought two so that my wife may help with the trimming.
There is an advantage to roll criming that Lucky RK must not be aware of and it's not just style points.
Roll crimping has shown to provide better patterns and give less felt recoil. It's in print in several locations.
The quality of the roll crimper will give you the best of crimps or the poorest and the more post inside makes the difference.
If you find a problem with inserting the plastic wad after cutting any of the STS,Nitro,AA hulls it's because they are tapered. I have found that if you use the cone shaped tool in the mouth after cutting that the inserting and crimping gives better results. Later David

Here is a composite of my jam-roll set-up.  What I want to show here is the PVC pipe cut-off rig;

Your home made set up appears to be a simple and easy set up to use. The only problem is that if it was me I would end up cutting the heck out of myself because I'm that way.
The trim tool that I speak of takes the hull cutting away from the body and only cost $20 It is also fast and quick as you don't have to follow the PVC around to complete a cut.
I'm not that good with the insertion of pics but will try to do so.
You are more than likely fast with it and that is good but I see blood if used by me. Take Care David

Like Sir Charles I also use a PVC pipe cut-off guide and an Xacto knife...Cost is about a buck, and it is easy, fast and safe to use.

Although to date I've only loaded brass Magtech hulls, I did make a tool for cutting off excess plastic.  It looks remarkably like Sir Chas.' and what BDM's looks like.

The guy in Winchester is awesome!  He is also the Black powder guy for NSSA in Winchester.

I think I have been buying BP from hime since about 2005.

Preorder what you want and agree on time, drive out to winchester, va - pay only for the powder with no hazmat or shipping.

Pickup, then go visit Taylors - which is less than 15-20 minutes away.

Then enjoy lunch at one of a few local hangouts - like the Apple House off of 66 and 55 heading back to Loudoun County.

It helps that my family lives up that way and a 3 day weekend visit can then include my trip out to winchester.

I may see if he has a restored 10 gauge kit since time I am up there.

Pony Racer I believe you have confused two seperate dealers.  Jackie Venskoski is the black powder dealer near the N-SSA range and Tom and Alice run The Winchester Sutler and the shotgun business near there but further out on one of the back roads.

This is a bit more involved but it does a great job of trimming.  It is a 12" jewelers lathe with a cut off wheel mounted  in a Dremel tool on the tool post.

Pony Racer, The man and his wife who run the Back Creek shop are very nice to deal with and Winchester is a nice place to stay. My wife has folks in PA. and when we drive from Louisiana we sometimes stay in the area.
The one thing that takes away from it is that I-81 is bumper to bumper with trucks from the time you leave Knoxville.
The drive along the road is wonderrful when you can see between the trucks. I understand that several large shipping companies have depots along the route which is the reason.
The last trip we were in a terrible down pour and two of the same company's trucks stayed side by for over 20 miles which resulted in a large back up.
I wrote a letter to the company to no avail. Later David

Litl Rooster,

This year I have trimmed about ten or twelve boxes of 12 gauge Remington STS's, Four or five boxes of 16 gauge Remington Game Loads, and one box of 10 gauge.  Setting here I do not remember the brand of the 10 gauge hulls.

I have not tried paper hulls because I do not have any.  The cutoff wheel is great with plastic but I do not know how it would work with paper.  If I ever get to try any I will let you know how it works.

Fairshake,

You were actually on Interstate 40 when you came through Knoxville.  The lower end of Interstate 81 originates about twenty miles or so east of Knoxville.  Just as you described, traffic has always been horrible from west of Knoxville all the way up through Virginia.  There is a lot of industry in Kingsport Tennessee and a lot of the products are moved via truck lines, many of which have terminals in the area.

We travel up the I81 corridor a lot and it is never fun.

Lucky RK, I was in the ARMY in some hostile areas and was very able to read maps. I know I was on I-40 and that you connect to I-81 just above Knoxville. I have made this trip no less than 10 times. When you head North from Knoxville the party begins and that is what I was talking about. Many of the trucks headed south on 81 go through Knoxville to continue WEST so that is all in the same area.
I apoligese if my very brief detail of a road trip caused anyone to become lost and headed in the wrong direction!!
You must be a trip to talk to if you are this quick to tell someone they were wrong when all they were doing was speaking in general terms and not giving precise information.
Look at the US map in the road atlas sold at Wally world and tell me if you can see any junction when they show I-81 coming into Knoxville before changing into I-40 . Have a nice Day!!
