Lucky RK, I was in the ARMY in some hostile areas and was very able to read maps. I know I was on I-40 and that you connect to I-81 just above Knoxville. I have made this trip no less than 10 times. When you head North from Knoxville the party begins and that is what I was talking about. Many of the trucks headed south on 81 go through Knoxville to continue WEST so that is all in the same area.
I apoligese if my very brief detail of a road trip caused anyone to become lost and headed in the wrong direction!!
You must be a trip to talk to if you are this quick to tell someone they were wrong when all they were doing was speaking in general terms and not giving precise information.
Look at the US map in the road atlas sold at Wally world and tell me if you can see any junction when they show I-81 coming into Knoxville before changing into I-40 . Have a nice Day!!

I've shot 2 matches with the new shorty roll crimps and have not had a single hull offer to stick. I purposly picked up a bunch of junk hulls at the Sunday match to see if there are any that don't like the roll crimp.

Some of the old hand roll crimpers had a square profile roll crimp instead of the commonly found rounded profile.Anyone ever try that type roll crimp?

That's what I have, and it don't work well at all.

I scrounged around and found a bunch of "not top of the line" once fired hulls(Remington, Winchester and Federal-all had bright bases-steel or aluminum) for my roll crimp trials.
I have been using many times fired STS hulls and they work fine.
I was impressed with some of the cheap hulls because they rolled very nicely. The best being the maroon Federal hulls.
Off to a match Saturday with enough of the cheap ones to finish a match.
What a disappointment. They loaded very well, fired very well but the heat of the Pyrodex burn turned them into crispy critters. They came out, sometimes reluctantly, melted and twisted into odd shapes. The shapes sometimes caught on the chamber walls which caused them to not eject. The maroon Federals looked like they had been in the Chicago fire.
I had about decided that I had made a loading mistake of some sort when I remembered that I also had some of the previously loaded STS hulls with me. I loaded them for the last stage and they came out easily, burned but smooth.
Guess I learned my lesson. Stick with the quality hulls. I'd rather shoot the STS but can get by with AAs.

Noz,

I have been using those maroon colored Federal hulls for loading my black powder shot shells for a couple years now. I like the fact that there are bunches available at every shoot I go to and the fact that they crimp beautifully. I do however make sure to size all of the bases, by doing this they sail out of my double every time. I load with either real black or a reduced 777 load. I tried to use Pyrodex to load shotgun once and found that it melted AA hulls to the point I had to pry them out of the chambers. I noticed at the last shoot that you were using STS hulls, I guess they hold up better to the heat.
