I was wondering the other day, if anyone has tried using a .40/75 chambering in the 1876 (like a wildcat caliber) or weather the pressure would be to much of the action? I thought perhaps this would give the .40 cal. bullet a lot flatter trajectory verses the 45/75  caliber.............Any thoughts Gents?

Interesting idea.  The cost of a custom chamber reamer, and custom dies might break your piggy bank, however! :D  As for the action, no problem. :)

Wouldn't the barrel also need to be sleeved (or replaced) ?

Grizz thanks! I was just kicking it around a little bit and figured I would try to make it shoot a little flatter and use it hunting deer. I have a gunsmith who is going to rebarrel an 1886 rifle for me, from 45/70 to the 50/110 caliber, which I want to use on blacakbear. Then again I like to keep things original on this 1876 model for the sake of historyk, so I'll just stick with the 50/95 and keep the extra money for smithing work in my pocket.

May be easier, and cheaper, to find a .40-60 1876 and have it rebored to .40-75, wont have to buy a barrel then. AND, youll have another gun!!! ;D
