I thought that I would make a belt slide for my wife after I made her belt and holsters but I think that I will make here a seperate shotgun belt. I need it to have double pouches. The belt that I now use has double sized loops and a strip above and below the loops for the shells to rest on but that style of belt allows the shells to fall out too easily if you just pull one of the pair. I think that double sized pockets would be better. A couple of years ago I met a guy who had a belt with double sized pockets but he had a small metal rod dividing each pocket in half from front to back. I think that the rod would keep the shells upright if one was pulled and would allow the pocket to be roomy enough that you would not need friction to hold the shells in. Has anyone seen anythink like this? Anyway I am trying to find a good pattern for the 12Ga pockets.

Are you talking about something like this? I can send you a pattern for the pouches.

I would like to hear about that Bob.  That seems to be about what people are using these days.  By the way, did you get my note on vacuum bagging?

Another design I think is interesting used a single pocket, but the shell is held high, and kind folded in under the cartridges.  That one looked good, and I would like to know how the tuck was make, for the most part it was riveted.  However Kirkpatrick used to make those and they no longer do, so I guess the loops are preferred these days?

Actually, in that pic it looks pretty obvious how they may be doing it.  Still hits...

Those are really attractive Massive but as they get older the fold starts to lose its shape against the riggers of use.  A search will find some old ones I made patterns for on here but was never really happy with them as they were very labor intensive.  I actually tried several variations on my little two shot cup but never found a combination that pleased me!  Not sure if JD was ever to do anything with them or not but he was experimenting on them back then also.  If you cross your eyes and really strain your belly you might can make out some on the shotgun shell belt in the picture that is second from the bottom here, each pouch was made seperate and attached to a backer that could be swapped around on the belts.   http://home.comcast.net/~gakracker/site/?/page/MY_PERSONAL_LEATHER_/&PHPSESSID=81c41fcd45b83d91dee0e89093f99f8b

Hi,

I took one of Will Ghormely's Johnny Ringo belts and simply made bigger loops and voila! A shotgun belt!

Here is a pic of the whole rig:

I just measured my 'shotgun belt ... it was a total of three inches wide ... the loops are 1" polypropyliene webbing (Which doesn't turn brass green like leather). The webbing was about a half inch from the top; and about 3/4" from the bottom was another layer of 8-10 oz leather that acted as a 'ledge' for the shells to rest on ... the 'ledge' was about 1/2" wide  and left about 1/4" of shell showing below the loops .... all this was guestimate, but so far it does not seem to leave a trail of shells wherever I go .... I am pleased with it ... as far as the loops themselves, they were discussed at length in the Leather Forum ... under FAQ/HOW-TO - LINKS TO THREADS THAT EXPLAIN THINGS, go to MAKING CARTRIDGE LOOPS .... or:

I was origionally thinking about using the 'pocket' type to hold two shells since my current belt uses the 'strip' type and the second shell is prone to falling out if only one is pulled out but after seeing the piece that Boothill Bob displayed I am thinking about changing my mind. The one that I have now does not have the divide between the two shells and as long as that crease can be maintained then I think that I would like to see how he makes it. Actually, I like all of them and am very thankfull for all of the replies on this fourm. I don't think that I would have been able to do what I have done so far without all of the fine help here.

Thanks

Nice work! I think that look is closer to what a historically accurate shotgun belt would have looked like but since this will be for my wife who is starting out shooting a SXS I think that it would be easier for her to grab two at a time with them nex to eache other in groups. Thanks for sharing the info as I may eventually make one like that for myself when I shoot my '97.

Just curious, How is the vacum bagging used?

I just thought I would stick this photo in here  . I made this shotgun slide last winter to try before I made a whole belt . I really liked it and now the belt is on my "to do list" . There is a bottom in the pocket and I wet molded it . After year one it still is holding it's shape  . Although the second shell can fall out it rarely happens if you are not doing acrobatics  ;D
Sorry I could not find a photo of the slide alone but if you are interested I can take better pictures or get you a pattern .

Cheers

(I hope the photo works , I have been having trouble with it )

This weekends SASS shoot highlighted to me that mt rig with 8 shotgun shell loops and 3 sets of pistol ammo and two holsters is way too crowded. Either that or I will have to put on 50 lbs.

So a shotgun belt will have to be next. Don't suppose you have considered that tutorial Bob ;)

Ballncap.. I will make the tutorial real soon. I've use a cartridge slide on my shotgun belt, its easyer to reload from there then from the gun belt, for me it is.. If you have a slide you can place it where ever you want.

That's a good point, and then it's a simple belt. Thanks.
