M1880 hunitng knife.

My reproduction Model 1880 hunitng knife arrived today. The sheath looks OK and the knife looks very good to my eye. My question is what short of an edge should it have. It is presently blunted. I can take it anywhere from knife like object to razor blade. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the pros and cons of edges on these.

This is an odd and often misunderstood weapon...but we wont go into that yet (and I'd have to pull THAT book too)..

Question of an edge is a good one. Seems to be a knife with no edge is about useless in most ways, however they item was also designed for entrenching (seriously) replacing the Trowel Bayonet and M1873 E-Tool! So not quite sure how long that edge would last in real service.

That is exactly why I asked the question. Since they were entrenching tools I wondered how sharp they actually were.

I have decided that mine needs a new scabbard but that can come down the line. The one it came with is OK but I have higher standards.

We will talk about new scabbards, as I'd like one too for mine. I agree the ones that come with the knives are a little lacking and are also the 1891ish pattern.

I will agree that most I have seen are sharpened, but when and where would be the question. You often find ones that have been sharpened so many times that the blade has a whole new contour to it! LOL!

My originals have factory edges - no sharpening marks - no whetstone slip-ups so commonly seen.
