My 3 knives

These pictures are of 3 knives I have that I use for my NCOWS outfit. The one with the white bone handle is a new one I just picked up at a gun show this last weekend. I paid $95.00 for it. I'm thinking of using it in my outfit as a belt knife. My only concern is that it isn't really period correct.

The stag handle knife is a bowie made by Solingen and is one of my favorites. I stuff the sheath in my belt and would love to get a good sheath for it that is period correct. But again my concern is, is it period correct?

The black handle bowie is modeled after one supposedly used in the pre 1900 era. It is one that stuffs in the belt and I like it. It's a big knife but not too big.

Anyway, please look them over and give me your thoughts or suggestions.

I don't mean to put a damper on things but I don't believe any of the knives are period correct.
I am not an expert. But the handle on the bowie looks like some kind of laminated material.
The Solingen knife has what looks like aluminum fittings. The white handled knife...Well I have not seen to many
period knives with finger cut outs on the grips.
With that said they are all nice looking knives but the question is are they NCOW legal?? I am not an NCOWS
member anymore so I can't answer for them.
Just so you know I was not putting down any of your knives I was just trying to be helpful.

No problem,  that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

Checked the handle on the black handled bowie and it's a solid piece of wood, not a laminate. So I think this will be one I can use in my outfit.

Still looking for one that is a bit smaller and bone or ivory (looks) handle. I will be looking for a period correct scabbard to go with it.

Something like what the cowboy on the cover of the newest issue of True West is sporting.

Thanks for your comments.

Eloy Santa Cruz

Rick- I am by no means an expert,  but based upon what I have seen I would say the black handled bowie is period correct.
My monikor comes from my family's former ranch Santa Cruz Farms located outside Eloy, Arizona. The Santa Cruz river runs through the land.

Just trying to help pard. The handle still looks laminated to me...I use ebony and I have never seen any with light and dark rings...Laminated...your call folks... ;D
Why don't you post a picture up in the NCOWS section and ask there then you will know for sure!!
Adios

The wood is just stained black,  but the laminated appearance is the grain of the wood. When examined close it is obvious it's not laminate.

For the sheath you're looking for - post a picture of the coffin-handled bowie over on the 'Leather Forum'.

There's a lot of talent over there.

Good Luck!

The Elderly Kid

Rick,
Who is the maker of that black-handled Bowie? I really like its proportions.

Think nothing of it. Pictures don't always show the way things really are.

The black handle Bowie was made and sold as the Rough Rider Bowie. You can find them on eBay. This one cost me $40.00 at a local gun show.  Blade length is 7.5" total length is about 10". It's a very solid knife and holds a good edge.

They also sell one just like it without the Teddy Roosevelt name.

You know what?  I think you're correct on the handle being a laminate.

The more i look at it now,  the more it looks like it is. Guess I'll have to go back to searching for my knife for my outfit.

Dang my luck. Maybe I'll have the handle replaced and make it more PC.

Well I wish it would have turned out in your favor. I am sure no one would bother you for that minor infraction.
I would use it until I was sure what I wanted to do.....either have it rehafted or stumble upon the find of the century ;D
Good luck pard. Getting your gear together is half the fun. Take care and stay safe.

I got a new knife that I think fits the bill even better. A picture of it is attached. I got it off of e-bay for $35.00 with free shipping. Not bad. It's a nice quality knife made by a company named Marbles. It's a bowie with a stag handle and it's more in line with the size I wanted too.

It's total length is about 11 inches long. Blade is just under 7 inches long. It's blade is around 1 and 1/2 inches wide.

The sheath that came with it is too modern for me to use. I think I will post a request for someone to make me a sheath for it. If nobody jumps on it, I'll go to a leather store and try to make one myself. I just want something simple that I can keep the knife on my belt with. My holster and belt rig are very plain so the knife sheath should be too.

I may ask Will Ghormley if he might make me one. He made my belt and holster so maybe he will be able to make me a nice sheath to go with his other masterpieces.

I like the Marble's bowie.  Post a photo of the finished sheath when you get it done.  Thanks

RickB

I did what others suggested and tried my hand at making a sheath for my knife. It's not as pretty as what I've seen others do on here but it works for me and it is my own design and build. Here is the knife along with the sheath I made for it.

The dying of the leather didn't turn out like I would like it to but I can live with the outcome.

That sheath came out really nice Rick...Marbles are great knives. Looks great.
