Repop - what the heck does this abbreviation mean related to firearms?
Computer language?
RePop - RePOP is a load-balancing proxy server specific to the POP3 protocol. It operates by answering the initial POP3 handshake and authentication request from a POP3 client.

At $2650.00 I'd look for a Browning 86.

I am surebTurnbull finishes the guns, but I wonder who actually makes the parts?

Hoof Hearted

Well it's gotta be a Chiappa............

Gonna cost you more than that price point to buy a workable original and have wood, Color Case, metal straightened out and polished, etceteras! And who the hell wants a Browning with the rebounding hammer and tang safety?

Turnbull claims parts will interchange with original Win 1886........will Chiappa parts do that?

I have no first hand experience but that's what I have been told. If you go over to the USFA forum you'll see that Turnbull has a history of buying "kits" or unfinished firearms for his special runs like this. Makes for a neat package!

Chiappa is selling the Carbine and Rifle versions of the 1886 and their Color Case looks pretty nice. They will have Italian proofs and such though......

Rooster,  I have Browning 92s, so don't kid me about the guns that bear John Browning's name.  Yes, they are made in Japan.  Very well made and tough as tanks.  I've handled a Browning 86 in 45-70 and can tell you that they are fine guns.  They are still beyond my means but I'll keep on looking.  I want one without the lawyer safety.

A couple of years back I built an "1886" Carbine. I used a model 71 receiver (was NOS) an original 1886 tang and trigger and locking parts. Browning NOS wood and a repop barrel with Winchester legend markings. I really liked it and it was miles nicer than the Brownings I had owned before but I traded it for a 10ga Remington 1889 hammer double, an early 44/40 Uberti Remington 1875 and a Korean war bring back MI Garand with all the trimmings...........I guess I did OK ::)

So, these Turnbull guns have some sort of new fangled safety that the originals didn't have? ???
I handled 100's of these Browning lever guns while I worked at RIA Co. They just didn't have that old timey look/feel that the old winchesters have........maybybe I ought to buy and old worn out winchester and have the barrel relined. ;D

No safety....just as original (well half-cock ((pre lawyer safety))).
Do a web search for Chiappa. Compare for yourself with the Browning you remember and compare to the Turnbull.
The Turnbull will looke more "authentic" have no Italian markings and the fit and finish is a set up, for sure!!!

Yep, I went over to the Chiappa site, typical "smokey" case colors for Italian guns. The Browning lever guns I remember seemed to be blued instead of case colors.....Am I remembering wrong?
I have had Turnbull do case coloring on some of my muzzleloading stuff, top notch quality.
If I remember, I'm going to call Turnbull this week and see how much more the guns in 50-110 run....

Not all Winchesters had Color Cased receivers, most carbines were not. 1895's were not.......

OK I'm gonna probably piss someone off here (it's probably only been a day since the last time)........

MOST (maybe not all but most) Italain guns are not Color Case hardened, they are some fashion of an applied color using Cyanide.

Turnbull's Color Case is very pretty, without a doubt, BUT (here it is folks) it is not always correct in every application. Marlin looked just like Turnbull and he has their "secret" method down pat. But it can be too BOLD on some other firearms. I'm not saying Winchester wouldn't have wanted it to look like that but most of the tiime it did not. I liken this to "over chroming" a restored car.......looks COOL on a hot rod but not factory. Turnbull excells at the art of eye candy and I LOVE their work, hell I even send them my own stuff from time to time. The flip side of this coin is most small shops get too much "green" in their Color Case.

Remember that Turnbull does NOT case harden, only case colors. He has admitted as such to other gunsmiths. One is the famous Colt restoration expert Dave Lanara. That is why most true restoration people used Dean Menk for years until he retired. Now many use Classic Guns in IL as he does far better work IMO. He did some Colt work for me and I have seen a High Wall as well that he re-did that was perfect!!

Turnbull IMO has become the QVC of gun restoration with a huge staff working for him.

So, none of you "On the computer during work" guys think this is a cool gun? ;)

Howdy Rooster,

Yup, it's a cool gun.  The price is high compared to the value in my hands.  As I said, I like the Browning 86, have fondled them and did note that they had a top tang safety.  The safety is UGLY!  It's also not needed given the half cock that John BROWNING designed into the gun.

So, I'm still looking for a good used Browning 86 in 45-70.  It's my dream gun.  Of course, should a fine Winchester 86 in 45-70 fall into my greedy paws for around $1300, I'd snap it up in an instant.

I'm not "against" Turnbul guns.  I just can't afford them.
