Howdy, everyone; while I would love to only shoot Swiss powder, it is out of my price range.  I'm deciding between Goex and Schuetzen for .44 wcf and  .45 colt.  I have used Goex for .45 2.1 and .45 2.4 in both fg and fg.

What do you prefer between Goex and schuetzen?  Do you like fg or ffg?

Thanks for your advice,

I have loaded Goex FFg in .44-40 and .44 Russian.  The fouling left behind proved to be a little too heavy.  Switching to Graf & Sons FFg and made a great improvement in functioning with the same load and compression.  Accuracy was about the same.

On a lark, all of my .45 Colt were loaded with Graf the other day.  So we will see.

Try Schuetzen powder.  The understanding I have is that it leaves less residue.  Not that there is anything wrong with Goex - pounds of it are consumed by my single shots.

Scheutzen defintiely burns cleaner than Goex and usually can be had for cheaper price...

SKJ - BTW i believe that the Graf and Sons is relabeled by agreement - Scheutzen Powder.

I use fffg Grafs in my 44-40s for a '66 carbine.  Prety clean burning stuff with good accuracy.

Fg is not really suitable for the .44-40 or .45 Colt.  It is meant for big bore rifles and small cannons.

Schuetzen for all my BP, burns much cleaner than Goex for the same price. Good Luck :)

Guess I'm the odd man out here.  I shoot nothing but Goex in all my guns.  FFg in 44-40, 45 Colt and shotgun.  Goex Express FFg in 45-70 and FFFg in 38-55 and 40-65.  They have quit making the Express, but are supposed to have the replacement on the market early this year.

With proper lubes it shoots great.  I shoot a full 2-day match without cleaning my guns and still maintain excellent accuracy.

And I like to support an American manufacturer - since that's where I live.

BB, I do shoot some Goex from time to time but have switched to mostly Scheutzen and Diamond Back.

I actually sent Goex a letter some years back asking them to reconsider their price points on Goex BP due to Scheutzen's price.

The Germans don't have cheaper labor and have to deal with all the import/export taxes and fees that Goex never sees/has to consider in their pricing.  I think Goex should try to beat the Scheutzen price - especially since from talking to multiple bp discipline shooters - Scheutzen is considered a cleaner burning/more consistent powder and in many circles considered superior.

On top of that, when you can buy Scheutzen 75.00 less by case than Goex (at least here in VA) it is pretty hard to support Goex.

I've switched to either Diamondback or Kik due to pricing, and ease of cleanup.

For cowboy, I use what ever is cheapest, since I shoot BP exclusively in it, except when I have to do indoor shoots.

God forgives, I don't........

Both Schuetzen and Goex have been proven to be great performers when Big Lube®LLC bullets are loaded.  That said, I do find that Schuetzen is cleaner in my guns.  There is a difference in the amount of soot produced in pistol caliber guns between FFg and FFFg regardless of the brand with FFg being somewhat dirtier.  I credit this to the fact that FFg also produces lower velocities over my chronograph, and thus probably less pressure and a less complete burn.  FFg also has less felt recoil, probably for the same reasons.  However, not to worry. . . . Big Lube bullets haul plenty of lube to deal with the fouling regardless of the granularity.

PR, where are you finding Scheutzen cheaper than Goex?  The best pricing I've found delivered to my door in 25 pound lots is $14.50 for Goex and $15.00 for Scheutzen.

BB - the guy in Winchester, VA who supplies BP to NSSA.

The prices did just update and by can Goex is .50 cents cheaper...but Scheutzen still cheaper per case - but only by 10.00.

I am sure I am not the only one who said something to Goex, but maybe i help make a difference.  If Goex keeps their prices this competitive I may buy them more...

He does sell Goex in a bulk container (25 lbs) which is cheaper but not sure how that works out and what kind of a container it comes in.

It is nice to have a place like that in Winchester, Va where i usually just schedule a trip same weekend i visit my folks in northern, Va.

In the Goex you want to use 3f, the Schuetzen or Grafs 2f works well because it's finer grained powder roughly the same size as Goex 3f.  Not really alot of difference between the two when you use the same kernel size in each brand.
I have not used any of the KIK 3f, but if it burns anywhere near as good as the 2f or the 1.5 does in rifles it's good stuff, and is less expensive than either goex or Schuetzen.
Powder Inc now sells all three brands, plus diamond back and Swiss. You might want to contact them and get a selection and let your guns tell you which they prefer.

And powderinc.com is the only one I know of who includes shipping in their 5-10lb prices.

I have both GOEX and Scheutzen on my shelf. They are just about equal except that GOEX needs to be compressed more for the same results.  My testing shows best results with around twice as much compression as is normally called for and that's with Scheutzen.  The GOEX requires so much more compression that I've pretty well just used it for my CAS shotshells.

The real deal, of course, is that either will work for CAS, even in the pistol cartridge rifles. It really takes a benchrest and a hundred yard target to prove the difference. Still, I'm retired and am in no hurry so even my pistol cartridges are drop tubed and compressed with my super-duper home made compression die.

Oh, and Hi, everyone. I lost this addy when my computer died a while back, just got back.

I use Scheutzen, haven't used goex in years, and don't plan on using them again.  It's overpriced for the quality.  Maybe if they sold express for the price of Scheutzen then maybe I'd switch.  Scheutzen is accurate and consistent, and leave a lot less fouling, and what fouling is there is softer than goex, so even if you don't use big lube bullets accuracy last longer.  I do use big lube in just about everything, but there are a couple that are not.

I'm pretty happy with the new KIK, seems to be less dirty that the GOEX and I can get it for $21.45/pound for 5 pounds delivered which is less than my local shop sells GOEX for.  The 10 pound order is $16.40/pound but I'm too chicken to store that much in my shop :)
