How's this for 'hot'.
I was forging a bracelet as a gift for my wife. 3/16" thick mild steel with hammered in brass and nickel silver, the end result being a raku look.  As I melted the brass onto the steel and removed it from the forge to hammer, I set it on the anvil and gave it a whack.  Bad move, as the brass was still a little too molten, and one piece went flying down the front of my shoe, which was laced up not very tight.  Of course I can't just drop everything, as I'm holding on to a red hot piece of steel.  I did manage to kick off my shoe, but by that time it was too late.  Two burn holes about 1/2" in diameter thru my sock.  At first I thought "thats nothing".... a little blister at the base of my ankle, and a mild burn on the top of my foot about 1/4" around.  Only to find out later that what appeared to be the 'milder' burn, on the top of my foot, was where the molten piece of brass came to rest, and evidently burned down thru the top of my foot in a pinhole-sized area.  Ouch.  It's still weeping, and that was almost 2 weeks ago.  There must still be a piece of brass down in there somewhere, although I couldn't find it digging for it with a sterilized needle.

Oh well, you play with hot stuff, you get burnt.  Fortunately nobody (particularly with a camcorder) was around when I did my little hotfoot dance.

That made me hurt just reading it.

Forty Rod,

More, please?

:D

Dang, sorry to hear about your foot, Jiminy. I'd go to the doc since it isn't healing.

JC, any kind of metal, no matter how small, left in your body can cause real harm. Go seek medical aid.

Thanks for the concern.  Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on it.  It has been healing, only very slowly.  I've kept it bandaged with antibiotic ointment, but part of the problem has been it's location...right on the top of the foot, (a thin-skinned area anyways) which gets irritated whenever you put on socks & shoes, even loose ones.  Today was the first day the bandage came off clean, no weeping...13 days after the fact, so maybe everything has worked its way out.  Nice little burn though.  I'll have to remenber that one whenever I fire up the forge.

Again, I appreciate the concern.

Big John Denny

Unless you saw the metal come out, its still in there. That could cause internal infections that can be real serious. A doctor and an X-Ray can determine if anything is still left inside. I encourage you to have it checked to be on the safe side. A foot is not a fun thing to lose.

SON OF A..............!!!

I was cutting some 3/16 nylon line and sealing the ends with a flame to keep it from unravelling.

One piece caught fire and without a thought, I reached up to pinch it out.

MOLTEN NYLON STICKS LIKE SUPER GLUE AND IS HOTTER THAN HELL!!!

Literally hotter than Hell11!

Guesss I'll be cocking my cutters with my left thumb for a week or so.

Ayup, nylon doesn't burn, it melts. My son is taking welding this year and that was one of the first things the teacher told the kids: Don't wear any nylon in class.

Sorry to hear about your thumb, Forty Rod. Want me to kiss it and make it better?

:D
