Pay it forward

I'm getting to be one of the older participants in CAS, and have been reloading since I turned 16. I've met a newcomer to CAS who's wife has generously saved and fitted him out with guns. One of his problems was not having enough handy cash to pay for factory ammunition. He had reloaded previously, but his reloading gear had to be sold to pay an overdue bill, or some such. He wants to share the cost of driving to shoots, and if I recover soon I'll do that with him. I tried to think of another way to help him along, and I came up with an idea. I still have all the reloading gear I've ever bought over the years, and I have a ton of gear. I've gone through my gear and found a good solid RCBS Jr. press with the primer feed, a Lee powder scale and volume measure, a couple of extra loading blocks, a set of carbide dies for his caliber and a spare Lyman loading manual. This is all stuff that I bought from folks who didn't need it because they had traded up, others that were getting out of reloading or bought cheap as spares at gun shows. He also has a computer and can get the latest load data on line from http://www.imrpowder.com/ where one can find a ton of fresh data using IMR, Hodgdon and Winchester powders. If other folks would look through their tools, find unneeded but functional hardware, and give it to folks that can't just pony up the money for four guns and reloading equipment, it can really help CAS. It's a simple "pay it forward" concept. If just one of you can help a newcomer by doing this, we as a community, can really help bring new shooters to the sport. :)

Good idea.  Kinda along the same line, guess we could always invite some of the newbies to load with us using our equipment.

Suspect donating a couple hundred primers would not hurt most of us.  My standard CAS loads tend to be about 5 grains.  That is 1400 a pound if I can still do math, so guess donating a couple of hundred powder charges would not hurt either.  It works out to about $3 depending on exact cost of powder.

Might have him pony up the bullets as they are about $10 per hundred in 44s

The idea has worked out quite well. He had a bench available, and I helped him attach the press, then went through the reloading process step by step. He is buying the bullets, primers and powder, and his loads are working out well. Maybe someday he will move to other equipment, and pass these tools along to another beginner. Pay it forward!!!
