How can I do more with the GAF?

Believe it or not, I did at one time make a list of things to bring, and then we never got it out.  Poor staff work, I know!  I'll dig out that list and compare it with yours.  Between us, we should be able to come up with a pretty good list.  It looks like yours is pretty complete, though.

I would like to put elaborate on this and create historical and modern options for the list as well as talk about the sources for some of these things and perhaps provide links to photos so people can figure out what things should look like.

I would also like to start developing a list of uniforms and the accessories that go with them. If you are using a 1874 pattern 5 button frock coat which other uniforms pieces should go with them. This is something that I have been learning over the last few months and I suspect other new recruits might also welcome informaiton about.

For our purposes, the GAF considers the Ruger Vaquero a Colt clone, and is allowed.

I would reccomend at least 200 rounds rifle, 75 rounds handgun for the Skirmish portion.  20 rifle rounds for the Sharpshooter portion (See below*)

ranges run 25 to 100 yards, most running between 25 and 50.

*Velocitys are limited for the skirmish portion of the match, 1400 FPS rifle, 1000 FPS handgun.  HOWEVER,  for the Sharpshooter (Long Range) element of the match there are no ammunition limitations outside of those emposed by range conditions.  In this case, Milspec full power ammuntion can be used in the Sharpshooter match.

What I would suggest, for the Department of the Missouri Muster anyway, is that Jerry and I can decide what camp equipment you will be likely to need, and we'll leave uniforms, accoutrements, etc. to the people attending.  I WOULD like to see us have some sort of forum with some basic information as to what a fully equipped field soldier should have if he's portraying an 1876 U.S. Infantryman, 1880 Canadian Rifleman, etc., to get new guys started.  (Strong, is that sort of what you were getting at?)  Since people tend to research their chosen impression fairly in depth, perhaps we should just come up with an outline and then let people fill it in with what they've found from their research.

That is exactly what I was getting at.
An outline that shows which items go together. Obviously, in the field, things varried and there were quite a bit of supply issues but a tocument that showed and told what works together woudl be a great starting place for new recruits. i.e with the  brown canvas duck uniform you should have this or that hat and these shoes or those boots. That sort of thing.

I think I could take a picture of a well equipped member of the GAF in uniform and build a list that goes with it. For example, this soldier represents a 1885 infantryman he is wearing a a pattern 1883 shirt, a pattern 1874 frock coat, etc...

If I seem gung ho you will have to forgive me. I cannot help it. I am an educator. I want to help other new recruits to have the info they need to create a homogeneous impression.

What did I miss?

Ducklings, you may have to have Drydock explain this around the campfire some evening.

I look forward to it.

If you want to loosen his tongue try this:

The aftermath of the duckling story from last year:

I will of course have the powdered green Gatorade for the "Gun shoot thingy cocktails" the spirits will have to be supplied by someone else again, although I have heard corn whiskey is pretty good in them for a sundowner.

I of course being hardcore will stick with my adult beverage of choice:

These will be available also for those assigned to guard duty, I will state that no one has been shot for falling asleep on guard duty after one of these.

Here's a link to a list I started. I haven't kept the vendors current and some are out of business and other new ones are taking their place. I believe we'll have one of the new top notch vendors at the Dept. Mo Muster in July, Carter and Jasper.

I often wonder why this is so seeing how pistol qualification was fired at ranges as far as 60 yards during our era.

Keep in mind all the targets are half scale, so we're simulating 30-50.  We can alway move them out a bit as well!

Accommodations like this are why I like the GAF so much!

Might be lots of fun to show what those Colt's New Service's will do at long range!

Niederlander

Charles, I know if I do my part (which seems to happen less and less frequently) my New Service shoots extremely well at long range.  Now I just need to get the new grips fitted.  The original hard rubber ones are sort of disintigrating!

Going back to this point. Is there anyone who has a clear photograph of themselves (or another GAF member if it is OK with them) they could share with me? We could use this as a starting point for this project. I am an educator and I feel the need to gather information and share it in a meaningful fashion with future new members.

If no one would mind we could start an album for uniforms in the GAF photobucket account I started and am working on.  The idea of that of course is to have a good photo record of what we do.

I think that is an excellent idea.

The album is in place, anyone has pictures you can send them to me with a description or PM me and I'll send the password.
