Depends on what style, but most patterns can be found in the ordnance manuals. You will have to enlarge it to full scale though. There are reprints of the ordnance manuals out there.

Thanks David but I have no idea where to find the manuals.

I hope I don't have to buy another ebay item just to perform another autopsy on it.
I've done more ebay autopsies than the CSI guys do in Vegas.

OK here we go:

Cavalry Equipment 1874 - Ordnance memoranda No. 18
Horse Equipments and Cavalry Accoutrements  Ordnnance Memoranda No. 29
Horse Equipmenst & equipments for Officers and Enlisted Men 1905/1908  No.1719

I also have a civilian version by Horstman dated around 1900 but it does not show construction plates like the others

I think David sells a copy of the Memoranda No.29...otherwise do a websearch for a supplier

"Horse Equipments and Cavalry Accoutrements  Ordnnance Memoranda No. 29"
Found it but it's probably way smaller than what would be required for today's larger horses.
Guess I'm off to ebay.
Thanks though Outrider.

Deadeye,

The cavalry saddlebags were designed to fit the cavalry saddle that was being used at the time...The McClellan saddle comes with three seat sizes....11", 11.5", & 12".  The saddle bags had a pebble grain texture and also had replaceable canvas liners which were retined in place by stud buttons.  To my knowledge there were two designs..the later being used up until the demise of the saddle...I believe the the last model was the  1928 version.  I have a complete 1904 pattern saddle (which was the first to be russet in color and have adjustable quarter straps) set up including the bags and if the width of the horse is what concerns you...you can always modify the cross piece to fit the horse...believe me the bags themselves are not to small for todays larger horses.  There are several very good reference materials available...one being "United States Military Saddles-1812-1943" by Randy Steffen.
