Mr. Hunley, $500 to clean and oil it?  I think the guy I uses charges about $25 to $40 for that.  Check around, and see.

Ok, here a few photos of my Hampden Wm McKinley hunter cased watch that I just acquired.  S/N 1585321, from what I can read on it, it was made about 1901.  17 Jewel , Adjusted, 25 year warranted case.  Deuber Special (Anchor Markings) on the case.   and the works

The man I got this one from has promised me a cleaning and oiling with the watch.

Mmm, nice watch. A lot of nice watches here!

I haven't heard from the watch repair "master" on a quote for my American Waltham...I sure wish I knew the retired guys mentioned here! Every quote I get here in Australia is $450, though the fellow I found has a slightly cheaper starting price.

I received the repro, and it's quite nice, especially for $35. Works well, very quiet, seems to be a pretty nice repro of the Swiss, although it is copper and brassy and not gold. I recommend this model.

In fact, I am so happy with the quality that I contacted the company (Chinese) about commissioning repros of the silver 1857 key wind model (Waltham/Appleton & Tracy). Similar to Gun Creek Phil's:

The company is very confident they can do it. I'm looking at having 100 made and selling them for US $49.95. I would have more made but it's all I can afford.

The repros would be electric with a fake key, and the stem would be smooth and used for setting unlike the originals, but they should do the trick and be the closest to the real thing of any repro. All present repros are stem winds, and that rules out the Civil War boys.

I know it's lovely to have a real one, but Civil War era/style watches are expensive, and damage during a shoot/reeanactment is a real concern. A $50 repro might be the answer. If people are interested!

A very nice looking watch.

Well, I've had my Chinese watch for about two months. Very nice for $35, but winding has degraded. First a little tooth/gear skipping, now so much that it is very difficult to wind. I guess cheap parts will do it!

I have bought yet another Waltham, so I'm pretty excited about that.

Highlander, can I use your watch man for my other watch? I think I'm getting ripped off here in Oz.

Cheers,
HL
