QuoteHey Paladin, how often do you put a "roll crimp" on your shells?

Jest the once!! I made up a very snug...Just short of too tight  (Notice all the Mech Engineer terms I`m usin here) collar that slides down the case to a pre set depth,  I heat up just the top of the case till I get the pre cherry colour pop the nut over it and a quick tap to marry the two together and `walla a nice roll crimp.

I will post some piccies of said contraption as soon as I get the chance.

Very cool  PUK!!!

Thank you very much for the illustrations.

I have a couple of questions:

  • Have you ever compared the shot patterns from a straight walled case to your crimped one?
  • Do you have problems getting 11 gauge vegetable wads in the case once you have crimped it?  Mine fit pretty snug in a straight wall.
  • How long will the crimp last?  Does it begin to iron out immediately or does it take a while.
  • It appeared on some of your original pictures the crimp was "uneven,"  Does one side begin to straighten before another?
  • How do you get rid of the scuff marks you get on the case using your technique.

PUK your technique is brilliant!  Thank you for the wonderful Christmas present!

The best to you, your family and all of your pards over the pond.

Merry Christmas,
Mako

Lefty Dude

I do a roll on the mouth of my Brass SG 12 ga. shells. I only do enough roll so I can still insert the 11 ga. OPC & fiber wads. The OPC is installed sideways in the case mouth, then turned flat and using my 3/4" maple wooden dowel rod continuing the installation process. I use my plastic mallet and once the OPC is on top of the I give it a couple of raps for the compression. I have marks on the dowell indication I am at the proper depth & compression. I never have a FTF or squib.

For the cushion wad I use Circle-Fly 11 ga. fiber wads.  I can squeeze these with my fingers and get them past the mouth roll inserted flat. They are more flexible than the OPC.

PUK; Those labels are sweet.

Ho Mako, Happy nearly Xmas pard  :D

  • Have you ever compared the shot patterns from a straight walled case to your crimped one?
We shoot mostly 10-15yds MAX so at that range we could only see a slight difference the crimped seems tighter
  • Do you have problems getting 11 gauge vegetable wads in the case once you have crimped it? Mine fit pretty snug in a straight wall.
    Absoletly none what so-ever
  • How long will the crimp last?  Does it begin to iron out immediately or does it take a while. The crimp seems to stay put, I have had to re-crimp only 4 in ages!!

  • It appeared on some of your original pictures the crimp was "uneven,"  Does one side begin to straighten before another?
That is down to poor technique originally I had not worked out how to keep the whole shooting match square so there are still a few `odd balls`   It dont seem ta affect accuracy so I jest `let em be`!!
  • How do you get rid of the scuff marks you get on the case using your technique.
I try not to get any  :-[  If there are they will be very light

I hope you `n` yours have a terrific Christmas too pard  ;)

I'm going to do it then, tighter patterns sounds good to me.  Thanks for the info pard.

I've only roll-crimped 2 shotgun hulls.  I used an antique roll-crimping tool.  I've never fired the 2 cases with a real load since I did it.  Why not?  Both of these cases (Magtech) had cracked after firing: one cracked the FIRST time I fired them and the other took about 5 reload/firing cycles.

I have 100 of these hulls, so I don't have to use these hulls.  I simply used a tubing cutter on them and cut off the cracked portion.  Now, they get used as BP blanks for the train robberies our club does during the summer months.

But I sure like the looks of a properly and slightly crimped brass case.  I might try your method, PUK.  Looks like a good way to do it!

Dakota Widowmaker

I long ago annealed the mouths of my Magtech brass hulls to avoid cracking.

I took a page from BDM's reloading guide and I mark on the rim how many times I have reloaded them. Just a small scratch...

I have some I have shot and resized/crimped 15 times. BUT, I have annealed all my shooting hulls at least twice now. About every 5 times I go shooting.

But, I sure am glad I bought them when they were $14/box instead of $24 like they are now.

I haven't put a roll crimp on any of my brass shells but I do roll crimp almost all of my black powder rounds in 16, 12, and 10 gauge.  I shoot a 12 gauge Stoeger Coach gun and a 16 gauge Lefever Nitro Special in Frontiersman and the shells are roll crimped unless I do not have time to put them together.

I have an Ithaca two barrel set in 10 gauge that I shoot now and then.  It is too heavy for CAS.  Wish I could find a good shootable 10 gauge for SAS.

Very nice looking!

I've been loading brass hulls for a while now myself, and I have a question for those that shoot them frequently...

I think I'm the only feller that has to pull them out of the chambers by hand. Because I do hunt with my shotguns with full loads, I'm not willing to polish the chambers mirror bright like some people.

Just to ask, do any of you have your brass hulls just fall out of the chamber after firing? I'm the only feller using them at the range where I shoot, and the only one shooting 100% holy black all the time at our local matches.

Well, Goll-ly, Andy!  Howdy!

You asked about this last year, but I just saw it.   ::)   ;)  (It's now Jan. the 11th)

No, you AREN'T the only one who has to "coax" fired hulls from his "shoot-gun" at matches.  I have lightly polished my chambers (Tula TOZ 66) but still have some fired hulls that stick in the chambers.  All I have to do is "flick" mine out with a fingernail, and only after numerous firings when the chamber has gotten dirty.  When clean, they fall out fine.  My brass Magtech shells swelled a bit after the first firing, but I never tried to resize them.  I don't think they continue to "grow" ... it was pretty much a one-time event, as far as I can tell.  I've reloaded most of my hulls 6-8 times.  My load is pretty standard, with about 1 oz. (by volume, or about 65-70 grs. of 3f if weighed) so they aren't powder-puff OR bunker-busters.

I don't much worry about it, to be honest.  I shoot for fun and accuracy, not time and accuracy.  (I used to be the other way, but in my older and less shooting life, I am now timed with a sundial.)  I look at it like this:  since I'm now slower than I was, I'm shooting more ... and having even MORE fun!

:D
