When I purchased my M 1871 Rolling Block  it had been sitting in a barn for something like 100 years. It had a sling on it. The sling was of milirary type with the two prongs like those used on trapdoors and krags. Could it be original to the military issue of the rifle?  I don't know much about US slings of the 1870s. It is marked HP on the end of the leather. Any thoughts?

Does it have two of those hooks or just one?  If there's just one, and it has a brass "button" on one end, it's probably an 1887(?) sling.  In that case it could be original to the rifle.

One hook and a button. Would that have been issued innthe working life of the 50/70 rolling block? Any idea what HP means?

I don't know, but there will probably be others on here that do.   Is it a New York model?  I would guess the 1887 would be especially common on Militia or Guard rifles.

It is not a New York model. It is the standard M1871 Army model.
