Thanx pards.  There was no problems to work with the pattern Will, my customer wanted 3 holes on the straps so I had to angel the slots but that was bo problem.  Thanx for another nice pattern.

Boothill.

Here are the  Flames of Hell holsters that I did back when the movie came out...at that time Will had not done a pattern pack for it so I kind of improvised and did the stitching pattern from a photograph.  The problem was locating the red thread but finally got it from Weaver :D ;D

By the way these are for the New Model Vaquero

As Marshall Deadwood said "Outstanding Work". It's always a genuine pleasure to view your projects. I'm sure you are the Number One Leather Smith in Sweden.

Many thanks for sharing this with us,

Good news with the red thread.  One of the reasons I decided to put the Flames of Hell into a pattern form is TLF now carries a Red Waxed Braided Cord that is just the right color to match their red suede pig skin I used as the liner, (and very easy to use!).  No more hand-dying, drying, rinsing, drying, and waxing red thread!  Yay!  The patterns should be available after the first of the year, (if everything goes through and goes right!).

I'll finish up the FOH pattern today and get it down to the blueprint shop to be scanned and the initial prototypes printed out.  From there they will go to Fort Worth for approval.  When I get off this post, I'll create a page with the prototype envelope pages on it so you can see how it is goin' to look and get a preview of the materials for puttin' it together.

Howdy Will, I just went to the Tandy web site and there is no red thread listed?

Is it so new that it hasn't hit there yet?

Boothill,

Yes the holsters are lined with red sueded pigskin.  They are built for the Ruger Vaqueros so the mainseam is not the same as one Will's....if I remember correctly..after seeing the movie I was so interested in making these that I called Will and asked for permission to use his design...he of course being the gentleman he is... gave his blessings...I thank you for that Mr. Ghormley....to date this is the only Flames of Hell rig that I have built but I have worn it at many shoots (I have also worn the HOG rig).

PET PEEVE
Most of the shooters around here look at these rigs and say "wow" beautiful...but they never order any because they are too busy playing around with steel lined speed holsters...SASS seems to have developed into what I call "Cowboy Combat" competition with modified gear of yesteryear.... so the adjustable cant, steel lined, skimpy holsters are very prevelent.   It's all about the fastest time...not about how authentic or period correct gear is...(they think period correct holsters are too slow)...thank you for allowing me to vent...

Vent Away Outrider.  And, I have to say, you are the true gentleman.  You asked first, and always give credit for inspiration where it is due.  Not everyone is as scrupulous as you.

Ride on!

Does raise a question for me.

I am working on a HOG version right now.  It is a nice pattern, and I am using it as a practice piece since I know leather work over 40 years, but have never carved a thing!  My feeling it that it would be right to pass on a fee to Will if I copied the pattern and sold it.  Normally that is what I do in other fields were there are patterns or designs.  I normally prefer to do designs myself, from reverse engineering, to dead out original.  But one certainly crosses a line when one uses a name or known entity.  I would not offer money for something I made solely for myself, in this case HOG practice pieces on bits of leather.  In other fields I am familiar with one pays the cost of plans, probably minus the some amount that is the physical cost of plans, for pieces that copy a design.  Of course there are many approaches, and some makers will not authorize their designs for any casual commercial use.

So my question is, what is the normal practice in holster making?

The other thing is what have the studios done?  There are a ton of copies of John Wayne rigs, presumably the makers aren't getting chased, as they would were they Star Wars related, I imagine.

Outrider, Will et al,

After reading about the Johnny Ringo rig and spur straps, I felt like I had to throw in my feeble attempts ... and 'customizations'

First, I lowered the holsters about 3" to hrlp me get those Schofields with their almost 8 inch barrels out ... Then I jused the same slotted conchos Will sold for the holsters on my cowboy cuffs ... and the 1/4" nickl spost on the buclkeless spur straps were again from a Will Gormley design ....

Good lookin' work, there pards. First class. Thanks for showing.

Outrider:
I hear you. Don't forget (shameless plug) there's always NCOWS. Seems to be a bit of a migration happening these days for pretty much exactly the reasons you describe.

This is another old pick ... another Johnny Ringo rig I made for a friends 1883 SAA and on an old gunbelt that I used when I first came to SASS:
