I have an 1865 Carbine with a shaatered butt stock.  Looking for either a replacement (original or repro) or contact info for someone who can do a repair job - don't need a museum quality job (the rest of the gun is pretty ugly) but don't wantit to look like Bubba drowned it in Elmer's

The wood's pretty crumbly.  I  have to walk that fine line between not having enough glue to hold it and having so much that it keeps me from putting the mag tube back in.  The picture doesn't show the 1"x4"x3/8" chunk that's missing out of the toe. I suppose I could try - not like this is a prize specimen - it's meant to be a shooter. If worse comes to worst, I can always get a repro.

magazine and tube are in excellent shape (now). the nut on the end of the tube had been crossthreaded so I had to file some threads a bit to get it to go on and off. The magazine was so crudded up the follower wouldn't move. A little Kroil and some Q-tips and it's as good as new

Thanks

Hi Mad Sweeney,

Herbert mentioned S&S Firearms, another place you can try is Romano Firearms.  In most case you will have to inlet for some of the Spencer metal, as they do not come complete and ready to install.

Their links appear below:

I got my stock from Dunlap Woodcrafts: http://www.dunlapwoodcrafts.com/MilitaryStocks.php
A quality prodcut and nice people to do business with.

Thanks for the feedback.  I'm still hoping I can find an original stock and rear site that isn't stop-your-heart expensive. One vendor offered me a orignal stock that cost more than I paid for the whole rifle . . . Oh well, given my gun-plumbing skills (or lack thereof), If I get a repro stock it will end up looking like it went through the war after I get done hacking at it!

It cleaned up pretty good.  Stock is together(ish). metal turned out pretty good considering it (and most of the wood) had been painted black and looked like it all had been coated liberally with linseed oil then had a vacuum cleaner bag dumped on it and put away to dry for 20 or 30 years!

I suspect it was either dropped from a height or swung against something. I had to straighten the magazine and magazine tube a bit.

Mod Sweeney,

How about posting some photos of your "shattered" stock.  Is your magazine and magazine tube in working condition?  Send me any photos you have to fsgrand2@fairpoint.net.
